Has anyone ever aranged a 'temporary visit' to a school?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has ever arranged for kids to temporarily visit a school while youdecide where to settle? We are Planning to visit SAfrica for a couple of months if we can before we go over, so I was thinking about trying to get the kids in school for a few weeks before Xmas next year (to get used to it, etc).

Any views?

I wouldn't bother to be honest - it's the last term now and will go very quickly, some schools also change their classes round every year (primary) so they may not be with all the people they would have spent a few weeks with. You'd still need to register, buy uniforms etc.,

I just want PIO to be a happy place where people are nice to each other and unicorns poop rainbows

Unlikely really. You generally have to show proof of a residential address before you can enrol in a school's catchment area. Why muck the kids about with getting some friendships going only to take them away and plonk them somewhere new?

Well, I wasn't thinking a long term commitment. And I am comfortable with it only being for a couple of weeks or so - just a taster really. The kids are keen and up for the adventure. Maybe I could ask the school where their cousins go if they'd let 'em in for a bit... Or maybe they'll just get a REALLY long holiday! My guess is they won't mind either way!

The problem with short term tasters is duty of care. Legally a school could be in hot water if they had a child on the premises and something happened to him/her but they werent enrolled (and schools wont enrol you without evidence of living in their catchment area). You might get a principal who is prepared to take the risk but most of them are quite risk averse these days and why would they bother to put themselves out if a child wasnt going to come to their school anyway especially in 4th term when everything is bedlam. Let them have the long holiday, no one is going to bother that they are out of school if you are in a transitional phase.
