HR Manager - AIM assessment criteria

Hi Braveheart

My OH is over 40 and we have managed to secure 70 points (we have managed to evidence maximum work experience and also he got the extra points for IELTS which helps.)

I’m not really sure how the new system works; I’m hoping we will be able to submit our Visa before it comes into effect!

Good luck with your sponsorship / visa application.

I’ve found a link that you may find useful if you are looking for HR sponsorship:

Hi Pradiprn

We have received our positive skills assessment with VETASSESS – Yeah! J

We have been on hols and have just got back so are filling out the state sponsorship application with WA.

We are trying to estimate the cost of living in the three chosen regions. I’ve checked out various websites and managed to get estimates for rent, some food prices etc. I wanted to ask if you don’t mind, how did you estimate your monthly cost of living? Did you take your monthly costs from where you live and then say it’s going to be XX amount more or did you take each monthly out going and then see how much it costs in the regions you have chosen? Might be silly question but some things are easier to find than others!

How are you getting on, when do you move? Are you moving to Perth? Have you managed to find a job out there yet?

Keep me posted with your progress. Any help you can offer for the application would be appreciated!

Thanks Clare.

Hi Clare

Happy to help as much as I can ! ask away.

I looked at costs only in Perth. I picked each individual outgoing and looked at the costs. partly on lowest cost and partly on a more conservative basis. My calculation came up to about 3000 AUD per month for a couple on a budget. thats the estimate that we filled up in the State Sponsorship Form

Making last minute preparations to move. Will be flying to Dubai and spending a week there with the in laws before we fly to Perth on 24th June. Havent found a job yet. I reckon its going to be tough what with an emphasis on local experience. But one has to try

Hi and well done Clare,

I'm a newbie and its great to find a real HR thread, as per previous hints at barking up the wrong thread.

Really encouraging discussion that provides a few pointers for me as I start my journey to secure a future in Australia.

I'm wondering how the new system will affect things - it is good that it opens up the possibilities for those over 40, but it does look like getting enough points might be difficult.

I'm targeting sponsorship as the only real route to securing a visa and the observations around HR Manager/HR Adviser were eye-opening.

Now off to find the relevant role descriptions!

Be advised that the HR Manager Assessment is really tough. Unless you are the CHRO of a fortune 50 company you are not an HR Manager in AIM's eyes. that is going by the observation that they are extremely old school in terms of management hierarchies and teams. They continue to look for large HR and cross functional teams reporting in to you as evidence of seniority and supervisory ability.

If you are going down that route make sure that your role descriptions and org charts show reporting relationships not just in HR but across other functions if you have that.

Else it is advisable to go down much simpler HR Advisor route where the focus is on operational HR activities.

Hi Pradipin

Thanks for your help. That’s kind of what I’ve been doing. I’ve checked out loads of website’s and used all the info I can find. We have got 2 children and our estimates are just under double of what you have stated so I guess we’re on the right track!

Can I ask what regions you have chosen? We have gone for Perth as 1st choice (which is where we will hopefully live), Kalgoorlie as our 2nd choice as we have a friend there but we weren’t too sure of a 3rd region (we looked at Peel but there wasn’t many HR jobs advertised there so it would be difficult to justify for that reason).

Good luck with all your last minute preparations, I hope they go smoothly! It will be nice to have a hol in Dubai first; at least you can chill for a week before the move.

I’m sure you’ll find a job once you’re there, there are always loads advertised on seek and other websites.

I dont remember the third region to be honest. had discussed it with the agent but I cannot recall it at the moment. I would suggest that you put Bunbury as it is close to Perth. I wouldnt agonize on the choices much because the state sponsorship does not constrain you in terms of employment in regions within the state given it is a 176 that you are applying for.

Thanks for all your help, we've been flat out all weekend with research and have nearly filled out the application now! Good luck with your move. Keep in touch! Thanks again Clare.

Hope you get the application in before the deadline. All the best and I hope to hear positive news soon.

Hi Pradiprn

Hope your last minute preparations are going well.

Just thought I’d give you an update, we applied for state sponsorship with Western Australia and received a positive outcome 1 day later :)

We have just lodged our 176 visa application today and uploaded most of the documents except for the passport size photo. So the wait begins :)

Hi that is great news! I also suggest that you book your medicals and get your PCCs done as well and load them.Case officers are being allocated within four weeks on state sponsored apllications and this will allow for a quick decision on your application.

I have started my journey to Perth and am currently in Dubai on a stopover to meet friends and family. Will reach Perth on Sunday!

Hi Pradiprn

Well I guess you’ve been in Perth nearly two months now, how’s it going? Are you liking it as much as you’d hoped? Have you managed to get settled and find a job yet? Where about are you living?

We’re still waiting for our visa grant, I’ve just had my medicals referred about two weeks ago, so we’re just waiting to get finalised, and then hopefully we’ll have a grant too soon!

Hi Clare

Its good to hear from you. So your journey is almost at an end. I hope you get the grant soon! It's been two almost two months since I landed here. In the process of settling down. Got a rental in the city since I don't plan to drive just yet. Havent found a job yet as they all seek local experience or industry specific experience. Most of it as can be guessed is in mining and energy and allied industries like construction or mechanical. If your husband has experience in similar sectors he will have better luck than me.

i have enrolled myself in a diploma program in HR to show some local qualifications in the hope that it will help with the job hunt. Have my fingers crossed and hope I hear good news soon

Hey

Glad you’ve managed to find a rental so quickly, I’ve been looking on a few websites and there never seems that much available, did it take you long to find somewhere?

Bad news re the job front, my OH doesn’t really have experience in that sector either so we may find it difficult to find a job also. We won’t be able to leave the UK unless he has a job as we can’t risk it with 2 children in tow :)

My OH spoke to a recruitment agency who also confirmed what you have said. Saying that though my OH’s friend managed to get a HR Mger role and he didn’t have industry experience so hopefully it will still be possible…..good luck with your college course.

How are you finding Perth? Are you enjoying it? What’s the weather like?

Clare

P.S. Still no word on our visa the meds are still referred, apparently there is a 4 – 6 week back log.

I hope things get finalized soon. its been a long wait for you.

And I hope things work out on the job front as well. I certainly hope that you guys have better luck than me. I have been pretty much told by Hays which does a lot of positions here that they wont be able to help me because there are lot of applicants with local HR experience and they are preferred over others.

If your husband has friends here already working then he has an advantage. perth is a closed and incestuous market in a way when it comes to HR...also nepotistic in a way. It works on who you know here. So if he has a network of friends and acquaintances here, he will find it easier to get in.

Except for the job things are okay in Perth for me. It is expensive particularly for someone like me who is unemployed and is burning off savings. but I guess once you have a job, it should be better.

This is a great thread! I'm an HR Advisor too and It's been interesting watching your progress through the months @ pradiprn and dsouzas.

@pradiprn

I do hope you get a job soon as I can understand how tough and expensive things are at the moment. How about your patner? Did she get a job easily in recruitment? What course are you doing, if you don't mind me asking? And whats the duration of the course?

the missus is back in dubai...she had options to go back work there so we decided it was best she do that until I get settled here. I am doing a Diploma in HR from the local TAFE. course is full time will be finished in end of November.

I did a search and the only Diploma in HR course I saw was a 1 year course which costs $10,500. Is that the same one?

I don't think I want to spend one year studying again so I'm thinking of looking at the Cert IV offered by AHRI which costs less that $3,000.

Local TAFE charges 750 dollars for the program if you are a permanent resident. the charges you are looking at is probably for international students.

you need to check for local TAFE institutes and then look at the courses. as an example you can check out Central Institute of Technology which is the biggest TAFE in Perth

Hi everyone,

I've been watching this thread with interest. Just to let you know my assessment result came back today and it took 8 weeks. I only mention this as earlier on in the thread some people were asking about it. Luckily I got a pass but it was for a corporate manager not HR. Just thought I'd let you know though about the timeline for a result.

Regards

Steph

At last, after hours of searching, I've found a thread with peole who may be able to help!! I also thought the other thread was HR and not High Risk!

We are trying to explore all our options and despite lots of applications for employer sponsored jobs, have had nothing positive so are starting to look at state sponsored. Hubby is currently a Global Head of Reward, reporting in to the General Manager - Human Resources. It's a more specialist role but looking at the AIM criteria covers everything apart from the recruitment for other managers (although he recruits to his own team). As with the majority HR departments, whilst he has a number of people reporting in to him, they manage areas of the function for him and don't manage people. They've just had a global reorganisation to flatten the structure! I'm assuming that this will go against him. He's also a Member of the Chartered Institute of HR with a postgrad diploma in HR.

Is it even worth trying for a positive assessment with AIM or should he look to downgrade his skills and submit his application to VETASSESS for an HR Advisor assessment? If he does this, is he then limited to the level of role he can apply for if we ever get to Australia?

I'm also HR qualified to the same level academically but haven't worked in role for the last 8 years so am assuming that I can't submit an application. I changed career to become a teacher but did it down the very rigourous employment based GTP route which isn't recognised in Australia!

Time is moving against us as we are both the wrong side of 40 now. Any advice would be most gratefully received.

Hi Spiringy

If you can afford it put in the asssessments for both HR manager and HR advisor. That will save time ŵith paperwork. AIM is tough and will look for cross functional reporting and look for managers managing people reporting in to the position.

as for applying for positions, no one bothers with the assessment as long as you have a PR. you can apply for suitable positions. I must warn you that the market is tough and they look for local experience. I have been here in Perth for fiv months now and still haven't found a job.

your husband may still have a chance though given his background and current role as global head of reward. So short answer try getting assessed for both and no getting assessed as HR advisor won't hurt his chances at greeting suitable jobs.

Hi Spiringy

When we applied for the AIM assessment we thought my OH covered the criteria as he is a HR Director but unfortunately we failed as he still wasn’t classed as senior enough and didn’t meet all the criteria. I would only say that if you aren’t sure that you cover all the exact criteria then it may be worth applying for the HR Advisor skills assessment.

We’ve now managed to get our PR visa and my OH is now applying for roles at his current level in the UK, so although the skills assessment was for HR Advisor you don’t have to apply for jobs at that level.

I suppose the only other thing that you will need to consider is what states are offering sponsorship for HR Advisor / HR Manager and that may also determine which skills assessment you apply for. We originally applied for Victoria sponsorship as they had HR Manager on their list but we had to change this to WA who were sponsoring HR Advisor.

Good luck with whatever you decide! Clare

Hey Pradiprn

How’s it going in Perth? How’s your course going, nearly finished it now? Any luck on the job front? How’s the winter been for you, are you looking forward to the summer?

We’ve booked our flights we’re visiting in Feb, flying on 10th for 3 weeks. We’re staying in Mindarie for part of the holiday and then in some apartments by the Swan river for the rest of the holiday. We’re just trying to figure out where we’re going to visit / day trips etc. OH is also going to arrange to meet various recruitment agencies to introduce himself and look for jobs.

If you’re free and fancy meeting for a coffee with us let me know and we can arrange.

Good luck with the job hunting, hopefully you’ll get something sorted soon.

Hi Clare

Perth is allright. Haven't found a job yet. Markets are really slow and quite insular. Happy to meet you in Feb provided I am still around. I have given myself time till feb to find a job. If I don't find one by then I will have to go back. The course will be over in two weeks. Have to work out what to do next.

Has Tony been able to talk with consultants?

I though you we're referring to the original post, not ours, never mind there isn’t anything we can do about it now.

Do you have any official information on how long VETASSESS skills assessments are taking to come back?

Hello,

I recently had a bad experience with AIM assessment (negative assessment) but will not give up so easily, and I will try again at Vetassess (HR advisor).

Because i don't have an agent, and I prepare all documents by my self, I want to ask you, if it's possible to tell me detailed what documents did you send at Vetassess. I don't want to miss anything and I really want to receive a positive answer this time. Thanks for your help! All the best, Ligia
