Free child care for 3-4 yr olds

Not universally and not for 3 year olds anywhere. ACT has universal free preschool education for 4 year olds but in most other states it is a user pays provision and places can be hard to come by. You could be up for around $70 a day for long term child care.

I'm not sure where you are going, but here in NSW I pay $75 per day for our youngest to go to a long day care centre which has a pre-school program. Also bear in mind that as children often start school a little bit later, you may be paying for longer. I didn't start our eldest until six months before she went to school because she is pretty confident, and because I do things at home too, she didn't really need it. However, our youngest is more clingy, and I think that she would benefit from a little more time at pre-school, so I am increasing her days to two a week. All of my friends (Aussies) only send their children to pre-school one or two days per week because of the cost.

The child care options are varied. My eldest daughter goes to a pre-school, so term time only and we pay $40 a day, but that does not include food and is from 9am til 3pm. Depending on what visa you are on you may be able to claim some back if you are both working. Pre-schools are usually only available for 3 yrs and upwards, although most centres have pre-school programmes.

My youngest goes to long day care as she is only 2 and we pay $79 a day which includes food and care can be from 6.30am til 6.30pm. You can claim a lot more back for long day care if you are eligible because it is more expensive.
