Probably yes, I have only found one from N. Ireland and wanted to get a few more quotes. Or could anyone recommend one that they had used.

Hi,

We had quotes from John Mason, Pickfords, Britannnia and PSS, Pickfords were £700 cheaper than all the rest, so we went with them, booked today.

Hi I was from Noriwch (the city! as they call it) - been living in Sheffield for 10 years though. Where are you heading too from Great Yarmouth?

Hi Guys and Girls

I have gone the do-it-yourself route, eg, we pack all our things, we load the container ourselves and strip it at the other end ourselves, so far the cheapest price for a 20ft container has come in at £1875, obviously on top of that we have to provide our own insurance but feel confident we will get change out of 2.5k, if anyone is interested in going the DIY route i will when i have ten min post up the names of the companies who have quoted me but in short, get on the net and contact shipping companies who don't ordinarily specialize in relocation shipping and you may well be surprised at the prices they quote, remember by DIY, you cut out all the expense of someone coming round to tell you how much you can fit in a container, some common sense should give you an idea what you can fit in, measure a room up and then visualize what you can fit in it, you also cut out the expense of paying someone to do your packing, we set our stuff off to sail late December and have already started to pack boxes.

Hi All

Sorry this has taken so long to post up, several of you asked who i was using going the DIY route, well here is the info of the company we have chosen to use, really helpful and nothing to much trouble, they are "containers direct" and can be contacted on 0800 0612575 or alternatively http://www.shippingcontainersuk.com

Obviously there are other companies, some came in slightly cheaper but we found the communication, help and friendliness of this company meant a great deal and won our vote, they also offer a price match guarantee.

Hope this helps some of you in your move, any questions or help i can give please shout up

Regards

Jez

Thank you for this Jez, but if you haven't already booked I would urge you to be VERY CAREFUL with this approach. Make sure you check the costs of the Australian side in advance.

I have been looking into this and it turns out that by far the most expensive part of the whole operation is the Australian side.

In addition to the port charges & terminal handling charges at the port (approx $540-620), and the AQIS charges that everyone knows about (a few hundred $ depending on how well the inspection goes), there are a number of other VERY EXPENSIVE charges involved before you can receive your goods. Your goods have to be cleared through customs - critically, this entails moving the container from the wharf to a bonded customs warehouse (these warehouses are all privately owned, as are the trucks which are hired to move the container to the warehouse). The container must be unloaded at the bonded warehouse, and the container must be returned by lorry to the port. The costs for this seem to be included in removal companies' quotes, but they are not included in "self-service" container shipping quotes, where the container shipping company's quote ends at the port. Therefore you will be expected to pay for all of this. I thought this would be a few hundred dollars... no, we are talking about $1600 to $2000 just for the container movement from the port to the bonded warehouse, the unloading into the warehouse, and returning the container to the port.

Then you still have to pay the fees for customs clearance (usually the bonded warehouse is also a customs clearing agent) - it seems these fees are approximately $400 including $102.00 of document charges (CMR and ICS).

After all of this your goods are still at the bonded warehouse, so you need to either hire a truck yourself and collect them, or pay a removal company to do this.

It is NOT POSSIBLE to have the container delivered directly to your door in Australia (unless you literally hire another container and have the unloaded goods re-loaded into this container just for the purpose of delivering to your house, which no one would do). Containers must be unloaded at bonded customs warehouses.

So ignoring the costs of collecting your goods from the bonded warehouse, the total costs of the Australian side of the operation are $2840 to $3320 (including an allowance of $300 for AQIS). And that is assuming there are no delays, so you don't have to pay for storage at either the port or the bonded warehouse, since usually only a few days' storage is included in these rates.

I haven't gotten quotes yet for the movement of the goods from the bonded warehouse to the residence, because it already looks like this approach will be an expensive waste of time.

My costings come from Australia Trade & Shipping, who were very helpful: http://www.australiatrade.com.au/Shipping/WhatHappensOnArrival.htm. There are other local freight forwarding and customs clearing companies too, but from my research their charges are similar or in some cases higher. They manage the process in various ways, some of them hiring a removal company for the two sections of transport (port to warehouse and warehouse to home), and including this with customs clearance etc all as one price, but the total cost of this was >$5000.

In summary, do your research on the Australian side of things before going down the do-it-yourself route.

Hi

We have just decided on our remover. We had 4 companies round. Pickfords, White & Co, Crown Relocations & PSS.

The thing that surprised me was how good they all were. It would have been easier if we were able to discount one or two of them at the start but they were, without exception, professional and helpful. They all estimated roughly the same volume for our belongings. They were prepared to pass on plenty of helpful advice. We would have been happy to trust any of them with our move. There were slight differences in the companies and what was included in the quote, and we went over them again and again. (eg Crown have the same company at both ends, PSS specialise in Oz moves, Pickfords are massive, Crown include some extra fees at the Oz end etc).

The quotes varied massively and in the end we went for Whites as they were cheaper. I hope we haven't missed anyhing.

I'm dreading the chaos of packing week (how to live in a house with 4 children and 2 pets whilst packing around us) and what we'll do if our stuff is delayed significantly at the other end. I know that everyone else manages this so it can't be that bad.

Hi Jez,

we are looking at doing the DIY route and have similar quotes to you. One problem I have is the company leaves the container on the lorry so everything has to be lifted about 4 feet. This is ok for most stuff but could be tricky with washing machines etc. The other is customs in Aus, I am told they are really fussy with home packed stuff and are more likely to fast track professionally packed containers. Of course this information comes mainly from the removal companies!!! Can you please let us know how you get/got on and if anyone else has gone down this route, how did it go?

Thanks

John

We should be moving down around May 2012

I have only had quotes via email, not had anyone round!

I am being quoted just over £1000 for a half container (although i have no idea how many cubic feet half a container is??)....Hows that sound? :wideeyed:

Some posts at the start of the thread were talking about nearly £4000 for a 20 ft container so that would make £1000 sound reasonable. Are you packing yourselves or are they packing for you? What fees does it include in Oz? I know it can take longer and make timings less reliable at both ends if you share a container.

Having the reps come round meant I could ask far more questions so was very useful.
