account set up during validation trip?

Recommended Posts

We are going out to Melbourne to validate visas early next year but will not be staying permanently at that time. Is it possible to set up any bank accounts whilst we are there or do we have to have a permanent address over there to do this?

Is there anything else we can do whilst over there? Register at schools etc?

Hi

You don't have to wait till your validation trip to set up an Australian bank account, you can do it online before you leave & debit cards would be ready for you on arrival in Australia on your validation trip, you'd just need to go into a branch with your passport to confirm your identity.

Yup, what was said above. Very easy to open an account online these days. Just look into which banks you are interested in (quick google will turn up Aussie banks) and visit their websites and read the opening account info (for people overseas).

Yup as above we set our accounts up online. Transferred some money before we left. Made an appointment with the bank a couple of weeks before we arrived in Oz and walked in when we arrived and got our cards and started using them immediately.

Thank you for your reply. That's a great help to know this as I would like to get organised. Do you have any banks that you would recommend more than others please?

We chose NAB in the end - the reasoning being that we did not have jobs at the time we set up the account and they do not charge. Most of the others seemed to have a monthly charge if you did not have a salary coming in.

We set up 2 accounts transferred all our money into the saver account - we were getting something like 5.5% interest (that includes an extra 1% for the first 4 months). You cannot touch the money until you arrive - once we arrived (and had been to the bank) we transferred some money into our current account and could use it immediately.

It all worked very smoothly.

I have seen good recommendations for most of the banks - maybe check as well on goggle maps which banks are local to the area you are going to be living in.
