Didn't know you had whippets?

I have two, one that my client wanted me to PTS, I convinced him to sign him over to me and another that suffers SA but has come round really good. I love them to bits. I had to put a friends whippet to sleep and it was terrible I think I cried more than her:cry::cry:

Awww, its heartbreaking isn't it. Didn't know you had them either :cute:

I'd have a houseful but our move to Aus and my hubby saying no prevents me. So I volunteer for a whippet rescue here and another dog charity. I foster, homecheck, do driving and other things where I can.

I'm a whippet, lurcher type but do have a few other pedigree breeds I adore and would love one day to have join the family. But I do adore whippets  I've long wanted a Frenchie but realise the work that goes into them and that they do better when living with another Frenchie or dog of similar type. And the Vizsla *sigh* Be still my heart. We've kept everything from mini Dachsunds, poodle, Gordon setters, Dobies, GSD, and cross breeds. My last two before Eric were a whippet x and a collie cross. We've had Eric about 4 years now.

Leaving Eric will be tough and its a ways off yet but he'll be fine. It'd be harder for him with his hang ups in Adelaide and I won't put him through all that. Also I am sure him staying with my parents will help them immensely when we depart. They'll have him to look after and keep their other dog company, it'll be good for both Eric and them :)

Normally I encourage people to bring their dogs but knowing how some of the whippet lines suffer I think you are making the right move.hugs k x

I'm the same, I have a list as long as my arm of dogs I want to own! I must say though that I don't think I could own a breed that I can't groom as I'm a groomer now and love doing it at work and my spare time! So although I'd love a Dobie, or a Rhodie, or a Dane, I can't fluff and prune them so it's a no-go. I'm praying in Aus that I can get a (eep!) St. Poodle.

Thank you :) I know we are, deep down. I still dream about ways we could make it work for him but thats my own selfish wants there. Its not the best thing for him. We can't really stay till he is old and gone either.

They sometimes do have some quirks and issues, no denying that. Eric's problems stem from his lack of socialisation as a pup. We got him at 6 months old and he was a basket case. He wouldn't even go out into the garden on his own legs to begin with, we had to carry him outside and put him down and wait for him to wee. Then he would scramble back in the house and go hide for 20 minutes. Walking him on a lead from the house took months of time and effort, coaxing him along, inches at a time. He was afraid of everything and anything and only his trust in us and our patience got him to where he is today.

He is a totally different dog today but still has some issues that while far less obvious, do cause him to stress and fret and he'll never be totally comfortable with these things and is liable to bolt in a blind panic if confronted with these things. Its been almost 4 years now (next month) and he's made huge inroads but the number of things that would be put on him in Adelaide seem so unfair to ask of him. He is happiest when running free, big open spaces and a ball to chase or another dog to chase him. But if more than one dog does this he panics and is a bundle of nerves. He takes months to settle into a new area or a new walk and is very much a creature of habit. My parents adore him, they get his problems and treat him with great care. He knows their house well, the walks and so on and its all within his comfort zone. He eats well there also, even better than at home with us as he has another dog around so seems more inclined to scoff his meals rather than picking and eating at strange times.

Snifter I think if you know deep down he wouldnt cope then its showing more love by not putting him through it.. not easy for you but better for him.. Hugs X

I also have a list as long as all our arms of dogs I'd like. Top of the list & what I really wanted was an english bull terrier but hubby things they are the ugliest of creatures, its true they are like marmite.. you love em or loathe them & altho I hate marmite I love EBT'S LOL.

Anyway then we argued over vizla versus weimaraner.. and I ended up with my first retried greyhound :biglaugh: within a day we were soul mates and Jakes ashes will be coming to oz with me. I have since had jakes full brother archie, and also jakes son Tom.. I was so lucky to adopt them & we just lost tom Nov last year which was very hard for me, not only to lose a much loved member of the family who'd been with us since before the kids but also as he was my last living link to Jake.. I took him home because of WHO he was originally... it was very hard indeed :( I still have logan who is unrelated & from somewhere different from the other 3.. he was a runty deformed no good for the track pup & we managed to get him, NEVER AGAIN.. give me a retired grey any days.. those puppies are MAAAAADD !

Following the loss of tom I got max in april, he was from the same kennels but totally unrelated by the person I got my first 3 from so I knew the care had been top notch & they only treat & train with kindness never ever cruelty, infact Ian is the edinburgh branch of retired greyhound trust also & does amazing work for them & Maxy well...he's my big black bear.. god I love him.

He's so different from my other hounds, this sounds weird but he's more "dog" like LOL. I mean I wouldnt say he particularily tunes into my emotions but he adores big cuddles & just pushing himself into me with his head slumped on my shoulder when i'm sitting down, doesnt lick or anything annoying.,, just a massive cuddler, I wouldnt say he's particularily senstive but he's wonderful loyal & a complete tonic for me. In the looks department he's also so different to any of my others.. a member of my family joked he looked like he had down syndrome (gits) my kids are convinced he's half chinese coz they think he looks chineesy (weirdos lol) and the most common insult i get is that he looks like he's a lab or part lab.. cheeky beggars, his pedigree goes back to 1838 !!!!!!!!! ROFL. (not that theres anything wrong with a good all rounder labrador lol)

heres a couple of Maxy bear.. he's the black one, Logan is 10 & well every week/month he's here is an extra bonus, he's had a happy life & having max here these past few months has helped a great deal as logan was so dependant on tom, you'll see in the pics he's skeletal, he's been like this altho not quite as bad all his life, he now has wobblers syndrome which is causing lots of wasting. Its doubtful Logan will be here at xmas time but we'll see... sorry i dont know how to resize these.. ps he gets off the lead for a run at a friends farm which is why theres outbuildings etc.

LOL thats Cody , my 3rd baby. I wasnt allowed a 3rd human child (hubby said so) so I said i'd have a low/non shedding pedigree cat, I wanted a cornish rex but saw his kitten pic online & said I had to have him. Hes a shorthaired Laperm cat. Not sure if there are Laperms in Oz yet, they are quite new to britain. He's indoors only but will love the heat & yes he is very much Lord of the Manor around here although he despises any other felines he loves the houndies.

Hi new here, Bensdad and Mandy - did you ship your brachy dogs? I have Frenchie in UK for Sydney and while I know there are no guarantees, this makes me REALLY nervous... any updates would be great. Thanks!

Hi FiandRemy

I am still in the latter stages of the visa process. So we haven't actually made any steps to call people and discuss shipping our boys as we are still waiting for out visa.

My intention is to still ship them.

Hi Emma,

We did not ship our boy to Australia - but we have friends from UK who shipped their Frenchie and EBT from UK to Sydney in October and then due to unforeseen circumstances back again in May. Both travelled really well. Their Frenchie is only 2. I don't know who they used but the dogs flew via Canada and they both did really well. I think the age and the general temperament of the dog is important. Ours was on the older side and had not done well from US to UK, so we didn't really want to put him through such a long flight (we were going to ship from LAX) but it's still 14 hours.

Good luck!

Fiona
