In the very samll print they all provide a list of exclusions, which range from : Container Decontamination Local Duties Inspections Local Taxes Sums due to government departments Container detention fees Demurrage Quay Rent Cargo Dues Provision of hoist or lifting equipment Quarantine I know that we have to pay for the AQUIS inspection which was quoted at 250 AUD per 30 mins, but what about these other exclusions. Les Avalook Posted August 6, 2011 Share Posted August 6, 2011 John Mason say they offer everyone the option to pay £15 to cover container decontamination charges if levied or you can just chance you may be unlucky and pay $350 if your container is pick out. You will be able to knock off at least 10% on the quoted price, there are millions of these complanies all desperate for your business. Secondly, we used WHITE AND CO they were brilliant from start to finish, and the company they use this end (KENT REMOVALS) were even better, no hidden costs, they did everything when they said they would and it was quick. OK, the reason these cannot be included is because they are mostly an unknown quantity and you are unlikely to incur any of them. I will describe each in detail: Container Decontamination: Aqis may determine that the shipping container is dirty before coming off the quay. So they may insist on it being sprayed. This is very unusual on household goods because removers will reject a container if its not clean before they start. Local duties: you are entitled to duty free entry on personal effects you have owned more than 12 months and are for your continued personal use so long as you have an appropriate visa to settle in Oz. If you declare any items less than 12 months old you may attract duty charges Inspections: Customs may choose to randomly inspect the container to check that you comply with the duty regulations, Aqis will inspect the goods, most companies can give you an indication of the costs for this but it does depend on how detailed Aqis decides to be with your shipment Local Taxes: same as local duties Sums due to government departments: this is a standard clause in case the government introduces new charges whilst the goods are in transit and which are beyond the removers control, in Australia presently the only charges are for Aqis Container detention fees: Shipping lines rent the container to the remover/shipper and you are only allowed a certain amount of time to have the container before and after shipping. If you exceed this free allowance you will be charged a daily rental for the container. The costs vary from line to line and usually increase substantially after 7 days. In the UK typically you might get detention if there is a delay loading the container, for example if you block traffic and so constantly have to move the container and it slows the loading process. Normally removers get 3 hours from the shipping line to load the container and if this is exceeded will charge detention to keep the container at the site longer for loading. It covers the extra cost of the haulier standing waiting (pretty much all container haulage in the UK is organised by the shipping line through a 3rd party haulier, rather than by the remover). You very rarely get detention in Australia because the needs of Aqis mean the boxes have to be brought to a warehouse and unloaded so this is done within the free time. Demurrage: this is actually the same as detention except it is the charge for extra container rental when the container is kept on the quay too long. Again rare at the Australian end. It could occur if there were a strike and the remover was unable to get the container off the quay, or if Aqis went on strike and a backlog grew in the customs warehouses and so there was no space to unload the goods from the quay. If you want your goods loaded into a container at the UK but not shipped for 2 - 3 vessels it can be cheaper than storage to pay the demurrage and quay rent to hold it on the quay rather than the storage and handling costs. Quay Rent: this is charged by the owners of the quay for the space your container takes up on the quay beyond the free time, for the same reasons already described under demurrage Cargo Dues: governments might suddenly decide to charge a levy on all cargo entering a country, currently this is not the case in Oz Provision of hoist or lifting equipment: it is assumed that your goods can be reasonably lifted by removal crew and accessed through doors. you would be amazed how many people move things into upper floor rooms and then change the layout of the house, doors size etc Also the remover has not seen the property at destination. So if goods cannot be moved by hand and requires mechanical assistance then this will be an additional cost. At collection, if you have had a home survey then these items which may cause issue should have been identified Quarantine: you all know this one! You might look at this list and think that alot of these items are beyond your control and so why should you pay them? Well, they are all mostly beyond the control of the remover as well. The bottom line is that international removals requires the co-ordination of a lot of parties and it can be highly risky. A good remover can minimise these risks but they can't eliminate them and at the end of the day this is your cargo and you are responsible for the costs incurred in shipping it. Sids knee Posted February 1, 2012 Share Posted February 1, 2012 From all the threads it seems to me there are direct costs which the remover can control and indirect costs whereby the mover has no influence and really can't be held accountable. Packing, shipping (freight charges), destination agents fees and insurance seem to me to be the four specific activities upon which most removers determine their charges - there may be others - though Crown Relo appear to include Aqis costs in their base quote. When comparing quotes perhaps the quote should be broken down into the various categories so a true like for like comparison can be made as I am led to believe the removers collectively negotiate the shipping costs (freight charges).
