PERMANENT VISA PATHWAYS FOR SKILLED - REGIONAL SPONSORED VISA HOLDERS

The Skilled - Regional Sponsored visa is a temporary (provisional) visa. Before you can apply for a permanent visa you will need to demonstrate that after you have been granted a Regional - Sponsored visa.

You must have:

*lived in a Specified Regional area in Australia for at least two (2) years

*worked full time for at least one (1) year.

There is no restriction on the type of work that you may undertake and the only restriction is that the work is 'full-time' and undertaken in a regional or low population growth metropolitan area in Australia.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics defines a 'full-time position' as one in which employment is normally for 35 hours a week. There may be some occupations, however, where full-time employment is less than 35 hours a week therefore you may be able to undertake two (2) part time positions in closely related occupations that equate to 35 hours per week. Please also note that any employment that is less than 30 hours a week will not be regarded as full-time.

For Skilled - Regional Sponsored visa holders, only periods of work and residence accumulated in a Specified Regional area in Australia after you were granted the visa will be counted towards meeting these requirements.

A Specified Regional area is a:

*designated area if you were sponsored by a relative

or

*regional or low growth metropolitan area if you were sponsored by a state/territory.

More information on Specified Regional areas is available on the department's website at

<http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/designated-areas.htm>

<http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/regional-growth.htm>

Once you have met these requirements, you are also able to apply for a Skilled - Regional (subclass 887) visa.

You also have the option to apply for a Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) visa at any time.

Please note however, that the RSMS requires that you obtain employer sponsorship in support of your application.

The Skilled - Regional visa does not require relative sponsorship or state/territory nomination in support of your application.

More detailed information on the pathways to permanent residence from a Skilled - Regional Sponsored visa is available from the department's website at <http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/index.htm>
