Victoria or Queensland??

Recommended Posts

Guest redwalkers

Hi All,

We have been lucky enough to have secured state sponsorship 176 from both Queensland and Victoria, so now have a dilemma. I am a registered nurse and my husband is a plumber/gas fitter. we have a 17yr old and a 12yr old. The more research I do the more confusing it is. Any thoughts?? Thanks:cool:

Different as chalk and cheese so not easy to give you an idea. I can bang on about how wonderful it is in Melbourne and others will bang on about how wonderful it is in Brisbane.

Completely different climates. Shops not open all the time in QLD so that does not suit me

Good luck

If you are looking for the big end of town and career opportunities within larger organisations then Melb is your better option. However if you have a profession that can be catered for such as nursing and plumbing then Qld is probably the better option as this comes with a more relaxed lifestyle. I qualify that comment by suggesting the Gold Coast as housing is reasonable if you purchase away from the mad mile and all the facilities are there in spades. Just bear in mind that plumbing is in demand but gas fitting is not in huge demand in warmer climates and often wages on the GC are lower. Not sure why but supply and demand is probably the answer.

I agree with Petals in the chalk and cheese opinion and it depends on what you want out of life in Australia. I spent my primary years in Melbourne although a lot has changed in 30 years, I always thought I would head back there. But we decided to start in Brisbane and I loved it. Average daily temps of 21 in the winter and 30 in the summer. It is sub tropical though so you get spectacular thunderstorms and when it rains, it rains. My daughter was 11 and for eighteen months she had a lot of freedom travelling from school on her own and getting the bus with friends to the local mall or into Brisbane city for a shopping frenzy. I'm not sure I would have the same sense of calm if she was heading off to Melbourne city.

Having come back to UK, we are now looking to move back but this time to Melbourne (OHs job is there). Daughter is now 14 so I guess will have to overcome the fears of her travelling into the city. I am sure whichever you choose, you will both be able to find work with not too much of a problem.

Melbourne is just like any other city and as long as your daughter is careful she will be fine. My daughter loves Melbourne she was born here and grew up here and she says there is nowhere like it in Aus for young people.

She used to use the night rider bus a lot when she was in her late teens, its a good way for them to get home from the city. Also most areas have lots of entertainment venues for young ones.

Today our weather is appalling, its cold and wet and windy and so is the rest of Southern Aus, it was the shortest day of the year two days ago so now we are on the up towards spring.

The weather in winter is cold this year and the snow bunnies are loving it, lots of snow around at the resorts for the skiers.

both good, a lot depends on the area , the south east of melbourne is the bay side, going towards the penninsula, that we feel is the best area, we also love brisbane and the gold coast , in melbourne you will need heating , in brisbane you will need aircon good luck on whichever you choose

Always been a difference in pay scales and it includes teachers as well.

The State Gov sets the wages in each State and I guess they pay the wages they need to pay to get good people.

My son teachers up on the border of Vic with NSW and the NSW teachers who live on the NSW side of the river where he lives get more money.

Same happens with docs when my friend's son did his rotation in Wodonga he used to cover the Albury hospital as well and he got less pay than the docs in Albury because its in NSW.

Still does not make us Victorians want to live anywhere else though

The Alfred is a great hospital, my oh was in there and the treatment he received was fantastic. The hospital is being refurbished slowly as its an old hospital and a rabbit warren but the new bits are terrific.

My friend's son is off there too shortly as he is finishing his Intensive Care Specialty so no doubt your paths will cross, he is doc though

Hi Dave (and sorry to the OP for hijacking the thread) but just wondered how the job was going, and what you think of it down there in Victoria...what made you decide to go there? I'm an ICU nurse and am considering returning to Oz, specifically Melbourne (hence my questions)
