Transferring from RN to RAAF

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

I'm new to the forum and to the whole concept of relocation to the other side of the planet!

I'm planning on Trasferring from the Royal Navy to a similar specialisation in the Royal Australian Air Force and would like to know if this has been done before. If so, any advice would be really useful.

If not, I'd better have a 'Plan B'

Thanks

:wubclub:Welcome to the forum , My OH is in the RN but leaving to go civvieside. I hope someone can help you on this forum !

It will depend what your trade is in the RN . Have you looked on the RAAF website for their oversea application lists .

I know a few of the forces stopped recruiting for a while...... not sure now though .

Thanks for your reply. I have equired on the RAAF recruitment website but I might be deployed before I get a response. I know a few people who have transferred from RN Subs to RAN Subs, so that'll be my plan B.

i cant see it being easy to transfer to the RAAF from the RN.

they are quite specific about what they want when it comes to trade and experience and its not easy to see a direct transfer of skills. it would be easier i would think to transfer to the RAF and then to the RAAF but i dont think that would be possible.

i remember years ago when i was in the RAF, looking into transfering. Their criteria was fairly tough. i dont remember exactly but i didnt have what they wanted. there was no shortage of applicants either.

i would expect transferring to the RAN would be a much stronger prospect.

Look at this page if you havent already

Hi and thanks for your response.

I realise this would be a long shot and a real uphill strungle. I've never been know to be one to make life easier for myself! lol. Transferring to the RAN Submarine Service from the RN Submarine Service would be, for me, a much easier and more lucrative prospect. However, after 22 years in RN Submarines, I didn't really fancy another 6 years minimum when I have the change to possibly do something I've always dreamed of.

The RAN are crying out for Submariners. A neighbour of mine will be leaving in a few weeks to do exactly that and I know they are looking out for Radio Engineers as I also know a ex-colegue who has made the switch also. I intend keeping this as my back-up plan but for the meantime, until I'm told 'no', I have my heart set on the RAAF.

I know what you mean about they're being specific though, the RAF is also. That's how I ended up in the RN in the first place! lol

A number of years ago, before I became an Artificer, things weren't going well for me in the RN and I tried transferrng to the RAF. Apparently I would've had to leave the RN, leaving me jobless and my family homeless, before 'applying' to join the RAF. But, you can 'transfer' directly from the RAF or Army to the RN. Don't know if this is true but was advised that it is because the RN, being the senior service, you can't 'transfer' to a more junior service. What kind of Bulls*#t it that! This was the 20th Century (at the time) not Nelson's day!

So, anyways, I looked at RAN Subs, of course I have. That's my 'Plan B' and who knows I may even enjoy it and stay longer than the minimum!

Kindest Regards

Forgot to meantion. Also tried RN Fleet Air Arm but I am now, as of this Sunday, in 'Extended Career' which is 'Submarine Specific' and since there aren't that many Aircaft on Submarine, it seems that avenue is also closed. ;) Shame as I would have been happier with a transfer to RAN Air Arm.

This unfortunately is 100% true. very archaic, but the millitary is nothing if not stuck in the dark ages. after all, thats the principals they were founded on!!! you would also loose your rank and go almost to the bottom of the ladder again!

well, if you want to get into aeroplanes then good luck to you! i dont fancy subs myself, i dont even like boats thet much, and i only tolerate Oil Rigs when i have to!
