Hi everyone,

Looking for some advice from all you more knowledgeable people than me about what we (I and my OH) should do! After looking through the forum and the Immigration of Oz website I realise that the process is a lot more in detail than I thought it would be!

I am about to enter the last year of my PhD in Belfast in electrical engineering (have a masters already) and my wife works in the local education authority.

With the visa point system changing soon, should we apply now or wait until later on? My wife has 1st cousin south of Perth (we would be looking to move to WA) and we would prob have to apply for either state or employer sponsorship if we apply now, but im not sure what would happen if we wait if we would qualify for independent visa.

Any advice on if we should apply now or wait?

Thank you!

Robin.

Hi, when the points change comes into place, it means that occupations on the skills list will no longer be viable for points. i.e my OH is a bricklayer just now on the points system he gets 60 points when changes come in he wont get any points for it!! All depends on how many points you get just now, if you have enough now but not enough when the changes come in then id apply just now. Will be different for everyone i guess :)

I am not sure I really understand the question properly. Do you qualify for a visa now (e.g. would you meet the recent work experience requirements) or have an employer sponsor lined up? If you don't then the question is moot, you can't apply now. If you do qualify now then why wait.

Tell me about it!!!! New points come in on 1st July all points are being taken of trades (tho list will still be there so still gotta have a trade on the list!!!) Just now u need 120 points after July 1st u need 65 points, they are changing points for age etc aswell so for some people new system will be better for others old 1 will be, and for other people like me and my OH neither will help lol, as on both we are 5 points short :arghh: we are looking at a 457 employer visa (though proving mega difficult to find company to sponsor a bricklayer) or other visa is State Sponsorship 176 visa which I think we are now going for, not many states will sponsor a bricklayer but I know WA will

hi eryannryan yeah we had thought about state sponsor to.... so confusing as it is never mind new points system. have you started the process yet?? btw we are from tyrone.

Hi Rock Chic no not started process yet, initially we were gonna go thru an agency, spoke to a guy in Australia a few days ago from a company called Act Now Recruiting this company will also help find job for u!!! Told my OH he would be able to get company to sponsor him as bricklayer (hmmmmm) they also arrange visa and everything too. Just a bit wary of dealing with a guy on the other side of the world and handing him over a load of money!!!! (though he was recommended to us from someone else on here) Gonna stay up late tonight and give him a phone again, few more questions to ask him, we are in monaghan (though im orig from scotland, moved here last year)

Oh didnt know about expo in Belfast...... I know there one in Dublin on 26 may but they wanting 79E per person!!!!! Well we were looking at either Melbourne or Perth as have family in both parts (at a push could ask them for sponsorship but would rather get out on our own.....then you dont owe anybody lol) Victoria State in Mebourne arent sponsoring Bricklayers just now WA are, my OH is also gonna go to a few quarries round here to see if he can get some experience (gonna ask them if he can work for free for a while) and then maybe get work in the mines over there, Ive a cousin in Perth working in the mines but his company not doing sponsorship anymore  Lol i know it is a big move, i have a girl also (10 next month) and like u i just want whats best for her, nothing here for us and its the same back home in scotland, my OH is going insane not working lol n if the winter we just had is anything to go by then i wanna leave asap lol
