Taking your car with you.

Hello,

I was wondering if anybody here has ever taken their car over with them when migrating? Was it a hassle, and more importantly was it worth it?

I'd like to here from people that have a normal family car or compact, like a mini (new type) or a 4 door saloon of some type (Ford, BMW, Vauxhall).

Look forward to the responses.

Regards,

Paul.

Hello,

So a LHD VW camperfrom the 70's early 80's would be pretty easy to take over? I think it the vehicle is under 4.5 tonnes LHD is not an issue.

LHD is obviously no problem, and being an older vehicle, that actually makes it a bit easier to import as its classified as an old timer (25 years and older)

Its still not easy or cheap, and VW campers are very common over here, but it can be done.

have a good read of this : http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page4371.asp

and then have a look on here: http://www.carsales.com.au/ to see what the local values are, and then decide if its worth it.

In your case it might be sentimental value involved, but for a normal vehicle once shipping, taxes & compliance issues have been sorted & paid for, you still own a vehicle that might be expensive for spares if its not an Australian model & expensive for servicing (a lot of european built vehicles) and still a grey import that are worth less on the local market when re-selling.

Hi

I did look into exporting my car and the costs for shipping seemed quite reasonable. However be very careful with rgds to import duty as the government can slap a 30% import duty on the value of the vehicle if is classed as a luxury car, that is BMW, Audi, VW, mercedes etc of which a mini will come under. Also, servicing for costs for german cars and cars like jaguar etc are astronomical with main dealers: I had a BMW 320D and an annual service for that was going to be $2000!!! Hasten to add i sold he car in the uk and now drive a Hyundai ha ha!!!

Hope this helps

WOW! The VW Kombi's are a fortune, it must be cheaper for me to buy one in the UK and bring it over.

Hi

Must admit i wish i'd of brought a kombi with me as they are stupid $$$ here. But remember, you must own any vehicle for at least a year before exporting it, otherwise it's more $$$ on import duty!! I looked at a couple of derelict split screens last year, total rust boxes and need a fortune spending on them and the guy wanted $30k for one and $18k for another!!!

There's not much of a scene in Victoria but it's massive in NSW & Queensland with loads more specialists!

Not sure how big they are in the other states, but here in Vic there are 2-3 very good, and very busy old VW specialists.

We had out '73 Beetle fully renovated by a place in Croydon, and they had a couple of fantastic looking VW campers outside that they had done. They probably have about 15-20 jobs on the go at any time.
