Hey Guys,

Long shot but we are getting a bit desperate!!! We are currently in Ayr after a killer 1200km drive in 24 hrs on the promise of a job... long story!!! We are 2 females travelling in our campervan and are looking for any type of picking/packing work etc... It appears that all the backpacker hostels have the monopoly on the majority of farms in typical areas and if you dont want to stay in them or pay the fees they are after it appears you cannot independantly find a job... this is the way it appears at the moment.. and from what we have experienced

We are willing to travel to get the work etc and as stated above have our own accommodation and transport... If anyone knows of anything or anyone who may just need a couple of pairs of hands...

Like I said its a long shot but wondered if any ex pats may have just gone on to buy a farm!!!!! Hope everything is well in your worlds.

Louise

Hi,

What you appear to have come across is disgusting and I would think verging on Illegal, However the priority is to try and find you work.

The best I can suggest is the you type the name of the towns around into google and look for local papers and see if you can look at the online version of the local papers that will have the adverts, so do searches for things like,

Toowoomba local papers

and see if you can find more that way.

Good luck with your hunt.

ahh lou and mel i know what you mean, i've worked up that way before and like you say its near impossible to find work without doing it through a hostel, what i did find though is that there was some vanparks that would do that deal as well, so you could try googleing van park, backpacker, work then just stay on a site in the vanpark with your campervan, also try cold calling round as many farms as you can and always ask if they say no they havent got work is there anyone they know looking for employees.

a good site i used for work is http://www.taw.com.au/DesktopDefault.aspx but you do need to pay to join.

good luck in your search :)

We had friends from Edinburgh come over last year on a WHV.They started in Sydney and ended in Bowen.7 months and 10,000 pounds later they went home disappointed in Australia.

Packbacker hostels were charging a fortune with the promise of work. Most places they stayed they only got 1/2 days work. Most places they turned up at the Asians already had the monopoly and were working for a lot less than was advertised.

They even tried the Roadhouses with no luck as no-one was interested in taking them as a couple.

They are now in Holland having a ball. They said there had been no trouble getting casual work in Europe.

Hey

Just an update... we have managed to secure work, we are currently working in a packing shed for a company called 2PH in Emerald, we originally came here to work on a grape farm but long story short, we both worked a 7 hour day each and earned 35 bucks each, unless you are superman you have no chance, lots of us started there and lots did not go back, I am all for hard work but my god you would never earn any decent money unless you were willing to work 7 days and 12 hours for each of them, the farm we are now at supply citrus to woolies, coles etc. They fortunately have over 3 months work available so we can secure our 2nd year visa here which is fantastic. We were very lucky as the day we went in there 2 other girls had just finsihed so we took their place and that was the last of the positions available. Its hard work but the money is pretty good and will enable us to save quite a large amount some to use to travel on with and some to put in our UK savings... We are currently in Emerald, its a bit boring here but the plus side is we havent really got anything to spend our money on!!

Had a luxury weekend, have a lovely new hire car and cabin to stay in courtesy of the RACQ as our blasted van is in the garage again, we had $2k worth of mechanics done on it before we left about 4 weeks ago, and now its back in again, we broke down on Friday, we overheated and apparently the transmission fluid is leaking into the radiator, luckily the garage is RACQ approved so im hoping we wont get ripped off!!! Hopefully we will get that back at the end of the week as its our home and has most of our stuff still in it!!

Thanks for replys and hope you are all well..
