Dunwa Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Currently working our way round the house working out what we’re going to ship or sell. I’ve seen plenty of threads on here about what people have taken or whish they’ve taken The question I have is for those who shipped, did you have anything seized, destroy by customs when your crate arrived ?

I’ve seen plenty of threads on here about what people have taken or whish they’ve taken The question I have is for those who shipped, did you have anything seized, destroy by customs when your crate arrived ? For me personally Dunwa, No! I was methodical with the cleanliness and segregation of certain items. I did also purchase some HiFi equipment which was over the $1,000 threshold per item, declared them and photocopied the receipts, for the agent, inserted another into the boxes and retained my copies... no problems! On retrospect, I questioned my shippers knowledge on certain items which were shipped anyway and I guess I got lucky with Quarantine & Customs because I didnt have any unsavoury events:biggrin:. I have seen some members have Christmas decorations/cones /wicker destroyed. Best of luck Susie x
PontePom Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 We also didn't have any problems with our shipping but if we had any doubts at all it didn't get shipped. We cleaned everything with Jeyes fluid. We brought all our tools, ladders, a plastic football goal but bought a new net to be safe. Howard
loubeany Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 jeyes fluid is the way forward and if you have fave wooden raw furniture .. do what I have done and paint it. I have also been methodical to the point of ridiculous but better to be safe than sorry... not bringing jute or seagrass baskets as aparently they are hot on that at the moment. the rest of my baskets I spray varnished.

Guest siamsusie Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Hi Susie, What $1000 threshold are you referring to? Thanks. Tom There is a threshold, its a few years back so I cant quite remember, I thought it was a 1000 bucks or so, but on new articles purchased, you get whammed import duty. Susie x
deb8181 Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Yes i bought a new Dyson from Currys and left the box sealed and declared it - no problems and nothing extra to pay, however, i did have my domed litter trays destroyed which included everthing else in that box including my cat water fountain, litter locker etc all of which were covered in Jeyes fluid. I actually claimed from the removals firm because they phoned me when my stuff was in dock in Oz and told me it was only the litter trays and did i want to pay to have them fumigated or destroyed free of charge. I said destroy them without thinking they would destroy the whole box so they admitted a lack of communication and told me to send in a letter with an estimate to replace the rest of the stuff in the box which i did and got a cheque back for over $300 which included the cost to replace my two litter trays :-)
janine the party queen Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Got billed $72 to have a xmas decoration destroyed. One of those really big baubles you hang in the window,it had plastic fir cones on it !!!
Guest alison and Simon Posted May 17, 2011 Posted May 17, 2011 For us in melbourne, they opened a random kitchen utensils box?? One that stated equine clothes - boots covered in jeyes and the clothes cleaned pressed and in clear bags., hubbys bike which we had been warned about - and again the good old jeyes (This box was well opened.) hoover and they must have looked at the filters cos they had put them back on the wrong way and given up! Garden furniture (plastic, )christmas decorations (all ceramic ornamnets really) and that was it as i recall. I didnt take christmas tree, outdoor wooden furniture or baskets made from wicker or seagrass. No questions or anything from customs and had stuff delivered on christmas eve so spent a happy christmas unpacking lots of presents!!!!!! Each box was a suprise cos i hadnt packed them myself!!:biglaugh: Alison
Guest matthew from Essex Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Hi, Does anyone had ship a waterbed over to OZ? we have lovely waterbed and would really like to take it with us, obviously, it will be be emptied, clean and repack. roflie Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Is there a list anywhere one can refer to of the do's and dont's for shipping... i have a newly purchased spice rack and a pestle and mortar i'd like to bring.... don't suppose there's much chance really??
Guest Jeremy Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 A friend had a Xmas wreath destroyed because it had cones on it, and he was given the offer to have AQIS clean his BBQ for a fee that was double the value of the BBQ. He told them to destroy it. Our possesions are currently enroute, and as we have been living in Indonesia for nearly a year we had to be very, very careful as the bugs here are exactly the kind sof miscreants they don't want in Oz. Luckily there is a fair-sized Aussie population here so the shippers (DB Schenker) have got a great deal of experience with relocating people to Oz. We put all of our food items in one box, inventoried it and included the origin of the item. We listed all out wooden furniture (which was quite a lot because Indo furtniture is incredibly good quality and 25% of the price in the UK), and sprayed our wooden/bamboo/cloth knick-knacks with insecticide. We also got our bikes pressure washed, steam cleaned and oiled, and all our shoes were scrubbed clean of dirt and packed in one box on their own. Any wooden items that weren't treated (varnished, oiled or painted) we left behind. Or so we thought - because after the shipper had gone we realised that they had packed a nasty, nasty dried flower arrangement that belonged to the house we were renting. Oops and ouch. AQIS have a list of what you need to declare - http://www.daff.gov.au/aqis/travel/entering-australia/cant-take. I've had friends move and had all their declared items allowed through. Their advice is if you declare then customs will give you a fair go. If you don't declare then you are in the poodoo. As for your spice rack - if customs can identify the spices from the label then you should be allowed to bring them in. But make sure to declare them. As for the mortar/pestel - don't use it and you'll be OK. If you have already used it then scrub it clean with wire wool, bleach it and re-oil it. And declare it.
warren&liz Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 Hi We just had our stuff delivered yesterday. Oh, how fantastic to see your own things again. We declared horse riding gear, boots, crop, brushes, tack box ect. We cleaned everything, not a speck on them but Perth customs still said they were either to be cleaned or destroyed. Will cost $150 dollars and we will pay as they belong to our daughter and some of it is sentimental. They were obviously through an awful lot of our boxes but that was all they were worried about. We brought the trampoline, patio table and chairs and our sundial which all cleared no problems. We didn't bring any garden equipment (lawnmower, shears, rake ect) and any Xmas decorations with pine cones we left behind. Hoover filters we cleaned well. Liz x
deb8181 Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 Yes we left behind any christmas decorations with cones on. We declared the cat litter trays, cat water fountain and cat litter locker but they said they wanted to fumigate them before we could have them even though they were soaked in Jeyes fluid. I also brought some cat blankets and bean bags which i didnt declare and hid them amongst some of our bedding and towels and these were never found. Yes it is wonderful to see your own things again, my thing was my decent hairdryer after using a crappy one in a furnished rental lol!! Arent you glad that you brought all your things though after seeing how expensive it is over here!!!
