Hi ya

We too are from Ireland and there are myself (38), Oh (Electrician - 39) and 2 kids (11 and 5) and we are heading to Perth on a 176, bringing absolutely everything with us from car/jeep/quads and furniture. We got our 176 Visa on 5 May and have our flights booked for 28 July and at moment sorting out shipping.

We decided to go for 176 as we felt it was best for us as a family...we didn't feel that applying for sponsorship was for us because if for whatever reason you loose your job, you have only 28 days to find another sponsorship and on a 176 visa you are basically like an australian citizen for 5 years and after 4yrs can apply for citizenship. So for us, we felt that was the 1 for us but again, everyone to their own...If you need a great agent, I can give you the contact details for ours and I have to say, worth a million dollars...they were absolutely brillant and we couldn't have done it without them.

Employer sponsorship is theoreticaly possible but quite hard to secure for most people and I would imagine in your occupations it would be difficult.

There is no try it and see visa, based on what you have said your options are employer sponsored (difficult) or skilled migrant (takes longer).

I would recommend you look into the skilled migrant visas, probably with OH as main applicant. Make a start by seeing if the points test can be passed.
