claireg Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Hi Anyone know if it is possible to setup a company name from day 1 for billing purposes? My partner's current UK employer wants to take him on as a contractor for the first 2 months we are in Oz. He is a .net developer and is working on some high profile projects at the moment. We are leaving for Oz in October and they really don't want him to go. So he just needs to setup a company name so that he can bill them for the work done. He has every intention to get an Oz job and has already been in talks with various recruitment agencies already but we thought if his current employer is wanting to give him work for our first 2 months then it takes some of the pressure off. if anyone can give us some advice would appreciate. Thanks
Petals Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Get an Australian Business Number, then you can invoice an employer for your work. If you earn over fifty thousand though you have to be registered for GST. Seems a lot of work for two months work. Actually setting up a company would cost a bit, you can buy them from shelf company providers. Or you could register a business name. Whatever you do you will still need an ABN for tax purposes. You could just visit an small business accountant on arrival and they will point you in the right direction .
Guest Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Why not just work PAYE under an umbrella company in the UK?
claireg Posted May 12, 2011 Author Posted May 12, 2011 Thanks for the advice Petals and Peach. He has found an umbrella company which our existing contractors use who he is getting in touch with tomorrow and he had already found this out before I posted too but didn't tell me! Thanks Claire
