Guest Amyjenn Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 I'm sure this thread has come up time and again but I'm new and a quick scan and can't find a similar situation to mine. I want to move to Australia. I lived in Melbourne for a year under the working holiday visa but would like to go back. I have recently qualified as a hairdresser, however I understand I won't be able to migrate to Melbourne on that anymore. My friend owns his own record store and has offered to sponsor me as my employer but as it wouldn't be a "skilled" occupation would this be possible? I've noted that I might be able to go over on a long term business visa which enables me to live and work for up to four years? After two years of living in Australia would I then be able to apply for residency? Any information would be super helpful and again, sorry if this has already come up millions of times or if it's in the wrong forum. Amy
Guest Fabian Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Hard to get someone in without a skilled occupation. There is a list online for which occupation he can sponsor. You are talking about the 457 visa...up to 4 years. Keep in mind though that there are requirements for the 457 visa that he will probably not be able to meet like minimum salary $47.500 per annum and a VERY good explanation why he cant find some Aussie to work in a record store. Also the $47.500 will very likely be rejected because its not the market salary for a retails person.. and I am sure DIAC wants to see a training plan where it outlines that he is teaching Australian. Even if he is able to do in a dodgy way like saying you are the deputy store manager and you are worth the position you will very likely not be able to apply for permanent residence after 2 years in Melbourne because a) very likely the Hairdresser is not on the Victoria State migration plan and b) Melbourne is not covered under the regional sponsored migration scheme and under the employer nomination scheme you must have a skills assessment for the occupation which you dont have because its not even a skilled occupation. Why you dont migrate as a hairdresser here in the ACT ? We need hairdresser here and its on the state migration plan. Understandable you want to go to Melbourne but ask youself whats more imporant ? 2 years quite Canberra (or somewhere else) or no PR at all ?
Guest Amyjenn Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Thank you, so you don't think I would be allowed residency after the two years, what is residency dependent on?
Guest Fabian Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 I am not an agent so I cant give you legal advice but I am pretty sure you wont even get a temporary sponsorship by simply working in a record store...sorry. Australia needs skilled migrants and I dont really understand why you, as an qualified hairdresser, wants to work in a record store instead of taking a state sponsorship somewhere else ?
Guest Fabian Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 As I said...you want permanent residence or not ? I live and work in the ACT and I would love to go to Melbourne or Brisbane or the Gold Coast..but guess what ? I dont get sponsored there and I want to live in Australia for good so I had to take this chance. But its your choice... ask any agent you want but I am sure they will give you a similar answer. Maybe other people here in this forum can give you theire opinions but in my opinion I dont see the reason why a migrant should get a permanent residence just for working in a record store in Melbourne just because a friend owns it, where as other people spend thousands of dollars and working hard and waiting years and years . But thats just my opinion.
Guest Amyjenn Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Oh I see. Well, I'm fortunate enough to have a friend who would like to sponsor me who happens to live in Melbourne, obviously some other people aren't that lucky. I was really looking for an objective view point rather than a personal opinion. Thanks for your help.
cjdrum Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Amy While you may not have appreciated the way it was delivered, Fabian's advice was actually very sound. First of all, speak to an agent. Secondly, you are VERY unlikely to get employer sponsorship working in a shop, (there are strict restrictions on both who was offer sponsorship and who can receive it). If you want to live permanently in Australia, 2 years in a city other than Mel is surely not too high a price?
