The old "reccomend me an area to rent in" question

Hi,

I know the question gets asked a lot and apologies for the repetition however I've read the other threads and everyones tastes, budget and circumstances are different.

We are: married couple, early 40's, no kids will both be working in Brisbane (CBD and South Bank).

We like: New houses, some sort of yard (garden) - pool would be ideal. Quiet area but ideally with the odd restaurant/pub nearby.

Location: Within 1 hour rush hour commute of Brisbane city. (can drive to and park in S Brisbane - car parking space is available at the office). Being somewhere near a train station may add flexibility but is only a nice to have.

Budget: Ideally below $600pw - can go a bit higher for the ideal place.

Having spent endless hours on domain I've identified North Lakes/Mango Hill, Sinnamon Park, Cleveland but all seem to have their drawbacks (mainly length of commute).

We'll be looking to buy a house at some point in the next year or so but want to get to know the place first.

Any pointers/suggestions folks?

Hi have a look at Westlake, Sinnamon Park, Jindalee etc ,all nice western suburbs with a relatively easy commute to the city that wont take an hour. Plot sizes should also be slightly larger than Northlakes giving you a nice garden.

I do not live in QLD but if I did I would live around the Cleveland, Ormiston, Wellington Point. My best friend lives in the area and we love it when we visit. We usually stay in Ormiston and can walk to the station. Its just handy to get to the Islands by ferry etc. Good commute to Brisbane. Pleasant shopping centre.

We live in Thornlands, which from what you say would not suit you - it's a bit quiet!! However, just up the road are Cleveland and Wellington Point which would definitely be worth considering. Although I love Ormiston, I think it might be a bit quiet as well.

The train into the city takes around an hour, but the drive at rush hour is usually around 45 mins.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the post, looks a lovely area but are you sure its only 45 mins to the CBD in rush hour from Cleveland? If so it sounds very worth considering, how about pubs & restaurants?

Yep, hubby does the drive most days. His office is at Eagle Street Pier, so if you are headed more centrally it could take a little longer.

Wellington Point has plenty of restaurants and the harbour at Raby Bay in Cleveland also has a good choice of places to eat. However, places tend to be dead by around 9pm around here!!!!

Not sure about pubs......its not like the UK where there are lots!!!!

The train into the city is longer - that takes around an hour!!!! Plus of course time to get to the station and from the station at the other end!

I know a few people who drive from Cleveland/Wellington point to Norman Park..... Rudi may know how long this takes ?

Then train from Norman Park into the CBD takes 10 mins

Seems to work for them as they avoid the single line journey that slows the trains + the jams close to the City

I've only really ever done that journey at non peak times.......and only as far as Cannon Hill, which is the suburb before! We used to run between netball in Thornlands and Cannon Hill on a Saturday morning!!! Using the Gateway motorway, it used to take at most 25 mins.
