A Quick Question About Stupid Driving

good evening!!!

Just wanted a little advice re 457 application!

I am the main visa applicant, and have been advised that both myself and my partner will need a police check doing.....however, he had to go to court in 2008 for speeding, and only kept his licence by the skin of his teeth, got a big fine and had his name in the 'week in court' section of our local paper (is this just a Wigan thing or do they name and shame everyone in their local paper?????).

The thing that is worrying me is that we came over to Oz in December 2009 and he didnt declare it on the entry card thing that they give you on the plane.....I have read some posts that not declaring things on the entry card can cause problems when it comes to applying for temporary and permanent visas and am wondering if going to court for speeding is something that should have been declared? and if so should we start grovelling now?

Any thoughts????

I think it would depend on whether or not it was a criminal conviction or not. I assume there was no time served. Do you know what the conviction was for?

No, it wasnt a criminal conviction, he had to go to court because he already had points almost the maximum you're allowed, and there was a good chance he could have lost his licence. He wasn't arrested or anything.

Lol, think it might be a Wigan thing...saw this section in the paper (pie-eater too, though escaped to big smoke - for now!) and was slightly appalled/confused by need to report v v minor offences with absolutely no context each week. Nothing better happening?! Hmm small mindedness like this kinda reinforces why you want to go to Oz. Agree with other posts...don't let it stop u! Good luck.

Hi Beth,

I think you are right, it is just a Wigan thing, I have had many laughs at the stuff they put in that section, for example - John Smith got fined £35 for stealing a yoghurt from the local Tesco !!! Ha

thanks for your replies!!!

As barbaric as 'a week in court is', I do normally have a quick scan if I ever read the paper.....a terrible habit I have picked up from my grandma!!!!! Guilty pleasure!!

I wouldnt say for sure, but I think they are more concerned about serious matters. Its also not just a Wigan thing, we have it in St Helens to.

I think it happens everywhere.

A friend of mine was done for doing 118 on the motorway near dunfermline, and because it was in the paper, and he was a serving RAF airman, the RAF did him as well for bringing the RAF into disrepute!

I'm pretty sure they couldnt give a toss about your driving record, although they seem to be getting quite tough on speeders there, so be careful when you get there!

They are only interested in criminal convictions, Speeding is not a criminal conviction so it does not need to be declared.

Driving with alcohol or drugs is classed as criminal but speeding is nothing to worry about. In fact its a daily pass time in Australia
