Guest zajckova Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 I was reading this part of the forum and I have a question for people who want to move back to UK. Before you decided to move to Australia did you visit it first? What made you decide to move there in the first place and how long did it take then for you to have first feelings of remorse? Thanks Mojca :wubclub:
2tigers Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 I visited many many many times, but in reality living there was a totally different ball game for me. I tried very hard to settle but it just wasn't for me. It didn't help that my marriage failed within 18 months of being there, that just added to my desire to come home. I am now home and do not have any regrets, I tried it, it didn't work, I am now home and extremely happy
sunni1234 Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 We visited twice before moving here. But like 2tigers has said, different to living here. No feelings of remorse either, just a different mindset. sunni
Guest chris955 Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 That's the thing, you can visit somewhere as many times as you like but it can never recreate what it is like actually living in a country day to day, it is TOTALLY different.
gilliantay Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 Visited 3 times before moving over..............................would have made no difference if I had visited 300 times........................the reality of life 24/7 is completely different. Going back to the UK with no regrets but now know where my priorities lie.
Creese Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 To be honest we never came before the big move. It would of made no difference if we had, we still would have gone for it. The first year wasnt too bad, its as time goes on that we know that the move to OZ isnt for us long term.
kissofthegypsy Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 Didnt visit before hand, the UK was that much of a crap hole it didnt make a blind bit of difference. Been here nearly two years and through the ringer relationship wise but never going back. For some people it works for others is doesnt, one thing I will say though, Aus to me is a very expensive place to live and I think that is one of the biggest misconceptions people make these days, plus the old biggie that Sunshine solves everything - it doesnt! If your in a crappy relationship in the UK it will be crappy in Aus. Sean
Guest chris955 Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 I am sorry to hear that the part of the UK you lived was, as you say, a craphole. That certainly would cloud your view of things I suppose. We have always been lucky living the South where it most definitely isn't a craphole which also makes it easier for us going back. I definitely agree about it being an expensive place to live and will only get worse once Gillard introduces her carbon tax.

Sean I agree with you here - that if your in a poor relationship in the UK, no matter how much sun, bbq's and beer you have, your relationship will still be at a flaw in AU, no matter if you visit beforehand or not. But generalising the UK as a crap hole is a little silly, it may have been awful where you lived so I feel sorry for you, and don't blame you one bit for wanting a better life. Anyone would if they lived in a crap hole, it must have been terrible for you, so i guess just the option of jumping on a plane to begin all over again must have been extremely exciting! For some though, they only need to jump on a motorway and begin a new life a couple of hours down the road, the change from one area to another can do wonders (and save a fortune!).
friedparsley Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 We didnt visit, but it would have done no good anyway, as we would have been in holiday mode, not reality mode, and reality bites! If we had never come to Aus, we would have always been wondering about it. No doubt saying that we should have gone when we had the chance. We are travelling back to UK in June for another trip home and will make up our minds about returning after this trip. One thing that makes returning to the UK attractive is the exchange rate from AUD$ to UK and the high interest rate here that is soon to rise even more which will in turn make the AUD$ stronger. As our retirement income is generated in Australia things look perversly rosy in the UK.
an1ta Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 Hi we had been here twice b4, but u see things different when on holiday. I am not going back to the Uk but I would if I didnt have kids. I did not come from a bad area in fact it was lovely, I just wanted a better life for my kids, and yes they have got that, I dont. Im not that unhappy that I need to go so I will stay and see how things go, but I will never say never
