car Insurance Problems

Aghhhhh,

We're back in the Uk after 2 1/2 years in Aus and have bought a car, just a cheap little run a round, however I'm having nightmares with obtaining a reasonable quote for insurance, I had 7 years NCD (i actually had more, but 7 years was maximum they allowed) when i went to Aus, my Australian Insurer accepted this without any problems, so while there i progressed onto 9 years NCD, however I can't seem to find any insurer in the UK who will accept any NCD for me, not from my Uk record (as it was over two years ago) and not from my Australian Insurer (they won't recognize overseas insurance), so I'm being treated as if I've been driving for 23 years but have no insurance history.

Anybody have any advice on Reasonable insurance companies that have helped in these circumstances.

Have read somewhere on PiP that Tescos Car Insurance may accept Australian NCB. Let us know how you go? Haven't tried myself yet still in Oz, just got to sell the house!

If you are over 50 try Saga (yes I know ...comes to us all!!) They accepted our no claims and so far have yet to ask for proof (we got a letter from RAC before we left to verify it just in case)

Good luck -

We couldn't find any insurances to count No claims for my husband when I first put him on my policy. In fact it was hard enough finding an insurer to count his years of driving as he'd just changed his license to a British one!

Quatea.co.uk

They accepted my out of day no claims from before I left Aus.

Up for renewal soon I bet they get me this time.

Its worth a go good luck

Hi we came back to the UK after being in Aus for 5 years. I was with the Comm bank of Aus Insurance and i emailed them when i hit these problems and they sent me a copy of my No claims within 10 mins I submitted this to Budget Insurance here in The UK and they accepted it it saved us nearly 600 nquid a year per car, so worth the hassle really. Hope this helps.

Ps our friends who also came back never had thier cars insured with a company in Aus (only the insurance that comes as standart with your rego) and that was knocked back by every company here in the UK as it is not classed as an "insurance Poilcy" therefore they will not grant it.

Hope u get sorted soon

theres no such thing as a reasonable insurance quote these days.

my last car change i went from a high powered 2.5 turbo Focus ST to a diesel astra of similar value, and it dropped £11.

I have had some very reasonable online quotes for the sort of car we are looking at in the UK. Comprehensive seems higher in the UK but not by much and when you take our Rego and CTP insurance into account it works out quite a bit less over there. Quite a number of UK companies seem to accept Australian No Claims.

if your car is financed here in UK you must have comprehensive insurance. having said that, TF&T is a waste of time and money. my insuance is just over £500 for an astra 1.9 diesel. 2008. im 34 no points no claims and full NCD. just for a comparison for you.

also i hope you arent forgetting to factor in MOT test every year if car is 3 years+ and vehicle excise duty every year, which can be from £0 to £450

Excise duty should be based on how much you polite the environment. Compulsory third party here plus comprehensive is another rip off. Yearly inspections are also the case here

What about the other way round though. I'm going to Oz with 7 years nc. Anyone you can recommend who'll accept this?

Most will for Fully Comp Insurance - ask your UK insurer for a certificate of NCD and bring it with you in case they ask to see it.

It is. nothing for the little tiddly things that run on flowers and sweet dreams, up £450 for anything you might enjoy owning.

Good that's how it should be, run a car that pollutes the environment more, pay more. Should be based on weight to like some European countries.

I would never have anything other than Comprehensive.

The cars we are looking at are either zero road tax or £35 a year so we can live with that. I have no problem with MOTs to be honest.

A whole different thread I know... but actually it shouldn't be like that if you want to tax polluters. It should be based on how much fuel you use and how many times you start your car from cold - the two best indicators of car pollution.

No It shouldnt. Its got nothing to do with pollution or saving the environment, or there would be better incentives to use alternative fuels. as is the same with all government green taxes, they do nothing to help the environment. just raise tax revenue.

You may find it hard to get a full no claims discount with your Oz NCD generally the max in the UK is 5 years if you can find a company willing to recognise your Oz NCD you'll often find the will only give you 3 years to start with and work your way back up, I had the same recently from switching from a company car.

Try tesco they were one of only a few that would regonise my company car NCD so may do overseas NCD.

I moved back in Feb this year after 9yrs in Aus.. AAMI emailed me my NCD statement and I passed this onto my insurer (Halifax) and they have accepted it as the UK Max NCD which I think is 7yrs..

There are a few out there that do accept the AUS NCD cert.. Just check with them first, as the thing that has changed in the UK, is that everything contains a credit check nowadays and that's another drama...
