Guest Jamie Hunter Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Hi all, We're moving to Brisbane in July and we're just now looking at cars - just second hand cars. Couple of questions though? 1. Can uk no claims bonus be transferred / taken into consideration by Australian insurers? (sorry if that's a stupid question) 2. What cars are easy and cheap to insure with a budget (being tight here) of $3000 to $4000? Im checking out carsales.com.au and there are tons of cars worth looking at  Jamie
Guest Louey Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Hey Jamie I had my fingers burnt when I bought a new car so here are a few tips. 1. Find a decent local garage and ask what they charge to check a car for you it will be worth every penny!!! 2. Depending on which state but in QLD no MOT just a Road Worthy Certificate (RWC) this is nowhere near as comprehensive check as an MOT. The car I bought had a RWC but cost me over $1500 worth of work in the 2 months I had it. 3. Warranty is offered by most garages but doesn't cover wear and tear such as the clutch went on mine and cost mega bucks. 4. Lots of Australians seem to like toyota's and hyundai's so they might be worth looking at. Ask around at local grarages see what cars they recommend. 5. If you can increase your budget slightly I would...we ended up trading in our heap of junk and bought a brand new hyundai getz for $12,000 with 5 year manufacturer warranty. It's the best thing we ever did as I seemed to spend most of my time taking the other car to garages was an absolute nightmare. If you are stuck to a lower budget get the car checked out is the best advice I can give. I did get a letter from my UK insurer with my no claims on, however my insurance company didn't ask to see it. I know that some insurers do so worth getting one. Hope this helps
Guest Jamie Hunter Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 Cheers Jayne and Angie, We may ultimately be on a small budget so ill restrict myself to dealers. Are you in the Brisbane area and if so can you suggest any dealers worth considering? Best, Jamie & Viv
BrisDubBris Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 Hi Jamie, Also keep an eye on the mileage on a used car in Aus. 20,000 k's per year is what I would not go over.
