Guest RosieO Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Hi all, We have been researching where to live in the Brisbane area and like the look of Wynnum/Manly/Wellington Point. There is loads of info on these places on PomzinOz which is great. My question is, what is Lota like as a place to live? (next to Manly) and does anyone have any experience of the Lota State primary school? Thanks for your help, RosieO

Thanks for your help, RosieO Hi Rosie, Just bumping this thread up for you, although it might be better to place it under the Queensland threads. Alternatively our sister site Poms in Brisbane should hopefully be invaluable to you. http://www.lifeinqueensland.com Very best wishes Susie x
Daffod1lly Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 Hi Rosie .... We have been in Manly for 10 months and love our local area! Up until recently, one of my friends rented a property in Lota and was very happy there. She loved the opportunity to be able to walk along the esplanade and the nearby parks. Her child attended the local catholic primary school though. Another friend has recently been looking at school with a view to enrolling her child in Prep and she really liked the look and feel of Lota - can't offer any more help than that though. If you'd like any more info, please feel free to ask  Oh .... and there's a fab fish/chip cafe there too! :cute:

Thanks, Rosie
paisleylass Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 This is great info, I was starting to look at Welly Point and Lota in my prospective rental searches, good to know they are nice places!
Daffod1lly Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Thanks Myrtle1, do you know the names of the Lota schools your friends children go to? Thanks, Rosie The catholic school is called St John Vianney and I have quite a few friends whose children go there. You don't have to be catholic to attend and there is a charge for fees (less than general private schools) which state school don't have. It's probably more Manly than Lota but the areas kind of run into each other. It is a walk-able distance from Lota, but this will obviously depend upon where your home will be. As I mentioned before, I don't know a great deal about Lota school itself but I have a friend who liked it and is enrolling her child there for Prep. The other nearby option then is Manly state school - very highly regarded in the area - both by results and general 'vibe'. BUT I am ever so slightly biased as my son goes there  Can give you more info on this one if you want it ... but you will need to be aware that they have a strict catchment area and so will (generally) only allow you to enrol if you live within the boundaries and have a rental/property address to prove this. There are also other schools in manly/Wynnum but I know nothing about these. This is great info, I was starting to look at Welly Point and Lota in my prospective rental searches, good to know they are nice places! We've been to Welly Point a few times on the weekends and it is just lovely. (Prob a 15/20 min drive from Manly/Lota). There are a couple of fab play areas by the waterfront and a small sandy bay that attracts loads of families on the weekend. There's a mangrove walk and also a little island that you can walk to from the play area. Can't help with schools in that area but I'm sure doing a search here will help you further. Good luck.
paisleylass Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Thanks myrtle, schools aren't an issue so no probs there! Def looking at between Manly and Ormiston now
Daffod1lly Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Thanks myrtle, schools aren't an issue so no probs there! Def looking at between Manly and Ormiston now  No probs ... Manly is just gorgeous!! Lovely long esplanade - great for walks with/without dogs. Lovely grassy areas to sit and have a picnic overlooking the water. Lovely cafes on the jetty and waterfront. There are a couple of little boutiques for browsing and a butchers, post-office, small supermarket etc. Two/ three marinas with different water-sports on offer. Lots of families with young children, especially on the weekends - not sure if that's a problem. Lovely farmers market every third Saturday morning and craft market every Sunday morning. The waterfront also has open-air movie-nights each month. There are a good few eating places and cafes .... but very little happening after 9:15 any night of the week - something which took us a little by surprise! The nicest places are mostly all closed by 9:30pm.
