familybonesinoz Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 We (we, wife and 2 children) all leave England in 49 sleeps to start our new adventure in Perth. Over the last few weeks I have found it hard not to tell a few lads at work (civilc construction site) that we had booked the tickets and set the date. Have made no secret of it to the management about WA adventure. Even stood down as foreman a few months ago so that they could get another in without having any worries if he didn't work out. In fairness the management are fine about it all,(don't think they believe that i am really off). However a few of the boys and the foreman who was given my job are changing their attitude towards me. The foreman has even tried to get me transfered to another site last week that's about 75 miles further away. The management told him NO and so I now have the pleasure of working 'under' a foreman for my last 6 weeks in England who definitely has a problem with me. If only all my problems were so small! Question is, am I just unlucky or has anybody else had this experience?
Guest The Ropey HOFF Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Everyone knows at work about our visas, i get asked every day sometimes several times and they all can't understand why we haven't gone yet, they are all jealous of our opportunity to live in Australia and they are all disillusioned with life in the uk and it will be a great day when i tell everyone......... we are going. Fingers crossed it will happen, i want everyone to remember me, by saying ............... he got out and went to live in fantastic Australia.
cornish78 Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 I've known I'm off since earlier this year and really trying hard not to tell work (as we're not leaving until October) - but it's really hard as I struggle to keep secrets  I manage quite a large team and I worry that they may think I'm abandoning them as we're currently going through a large restructure and a 20% staff savings.....I'm also selfishly thinking i may get some redundancy if I hang in there... I worry once I do tell people their attitude will change and I may be sidelined a bit, but I guess management will just have the business at heart (and not me )! You just have to focus on the future and the great life you will have once you move !

I wonder if Management have told the new foreman and maybe he's been spreading the word if the change in them is only recently? Keep your head down and then on the last day you could (politely of course ) tell him what you think of him if you so wished. None of it will matter to you when you get out of the situation. Good luck with the move over
Si T Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Just ignore him, but send him a postcard when you get there
Mandy28 Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Sorry your Foreman is such an "Ass" We have been really lucky with my OH boss. He's has helped us tremendously. Everyone in the company knows we are going (once we get our Visa) and they are all really pleased for us and can't believe that we are going on a great adventure! It seems like you are just unlucky with the foreman (probably a bit of jealousy on his part if he knows your are off to Australia) Good Luck with your move.
the bottler Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 I am really lucky with the people I work with ... all of them are happy for me except the one person I though was a good friend ... I made the mistake of showing her a picture of my son`s new property ... lovely Australian bungalow in the country and of course a beautiful blue sky ... she just took one look and walked away and now only speaks if she has to ... she will definately get a postcard or maybe even photographs of me in Paradise ! ...
Guest journeydownunder Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 My work have been fantastic. I told the teams I manage about 3 weeks ago because they are all very dear to my heart and we're like a big family. They have been so pleased for me and just keep asking all about it! I formally told my boss this week and he too has been very supportive. He knew it was my long term dream, its just happened much faster than expected due to a 457 sponsorship opportunity. I think he wishes I was on a longer notice period but all in all has congratulated me on going for what I want. I don't understand people that are negative about it. Fair enough if you were leaving to go and work at a competitor but we're all going to live the dream (we hope!) on the other side of the planet! Sod 'em that's what I say! Getting sooooo excited now! 5 weeks and 2 days until take off!!
Lucysdream Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 I have told close colleagues my plans as they wouldn't say anything, I wouldn't tell management till I actually had the visas in hand and flights booked, and boy I can't wait till that day!! I am not their biggest fan lol. I might even change jobs before we go, who knows....but if I am still where I am I will certainly be sending some sort of photo of me on a beach to the work shared email
Guest tandcmum Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 I have had to tell my boss as ive applied for sonsorship jobs therefore they need to provide a reference for me, also i need their help with statements of service etc for nurse registration. So far everyone has been supportive but i do wonder wether I will be sidelined a bit once it is definate im off
motherof2 Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 My work colleagues know but due to our falling at the final fence two years ago , having left had the do and got the present some of them are threatening to come to the airport to make sure I board! Other half is a different story - not a word leaked yet. I think he will be tight lipped until the resignation letter gets handed in.
Guest jackie Macdonald Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 I've had nothing but support and encouragement since I spilled the beans and many have said they are sorry to see us go! if your colleagues are genuinely happy for you then they are the only ones worthy of consideration here. Those that become unsociable/disinterested or plainly disapprove of the move simply aren't worth worrying about and are more than likely jealous!! It's your life and as the poster said before me... send them a postcard! All the very best to you! J xx

Just to give you an examplw when I was applying last year they rejected the letter from the HR head because her title did not say ' manager' in her job title. After few calls and an email to their 'boss' it was suddenly resloved. Good luck
Tommy Tucker Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 6 weeks is just enough time to really enjoy rubbing up your new forman The fun i would have in that situation. Just remember, once you get to Oz your old life in the UK will straight away seem like a lifetime away, so relax and dont worry.
Joob joobs Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 My boss knew right from the application stage because it was advertised through the intranet and you had to inform your line manager when applying.... and my boss applied for it too!! We were both offered jobs in Aus but a change of heart by boss's wife means that he's not taking them up on the offer... He's gutted! I'll definitely be sending him a postcard when I reach Brisbane!! :jiggy:
Inthedeep Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 I made my intentions of moving clear about a year before i left the UK and management seemed fine. For the last 18 months of working in the UK i had been working at a grade higher than my actual job (granted that was my choice initially for experience but after 6 months it became ongoing by default) .. i made sure that i spoke to HR regarding this and after demonstarting i was working at a higher grade on a daily basis i signed off by HR so that when a vacancy at that level became available then i would automatically get the payrise / promotion. For the entire 18 months i was told by managament that unfortunately there was no budget blah blah. The day after i officialy resigned with my 4 weeks notice they suddenyl found a budget and promoted 2 other staff members who were in the same situation as me .. i was sent me an e-mail stating as i had already tendered my resignation it wasn't applicable. Not even told face to face. It was inferred by my immediate manager (and friend) that the budget had been there for months but that management felt that thyey were in an awkward situation in regards to which of us 3 missed out (HR didnt want to go down the interview route in case the loser took the issue to the union). I was pissed off for my last 4 weeks and it was a really awkward atmosphere, i definitely felt i was leaving on a sour note but it made me feel even better about the decision to quit and move. No regrets
Lurkio Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 My H runs the family business and he's saying nothing until we actually get the visa, then we'll have to stand up and take the flack..... Me ... well, I'm bucking for a promotion and if I tell my employer I'm planning to leave - no more training, no promotion - no pay raise! Life has to go on whilst we are waiting, and until we actually get the visa in our sticky fists - we are keeping shtum ! No one likes to think that they might get refused - but the show's not over till the fat lady sings:biggrin:
ali Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 My hubby was lucky enough to get voluntary redundency, however, he was put on gardening leave for about 3 months as they didn't want his presence to 'upset people' ... hubby said fair enough, but it wasn't a great way to leave a company he'd worked for for over 10 years
Guest guest36187 Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 When I lEft the job that I was in....they had known from the start that I was going. In the end I manage to get away wit no dramas or fuss. I finished a night shift and staff said 'oh we will see you tonight'. I said no. They said ?tomorrow? I said no!!! Then they realized and said when did I leave??? I was leaving the following week for my new life.
