ghost Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Were hopegully coming over later in the year, and we are wanting a new suite. Looking online, they seem very expensive over there. Would I be better off buying over here and shipping with the rest of my stuff, or are choices / prices just as good over there ?

Guest siamsusie Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 Maybe have a look at Harvey Norman's catalogue on line and price them up v equivelent in the UK http://www.harveynorman.com.au/page/1255508460444/furniture-bedding-living-room-dining-lounges Susie x PS Maybe insert postcode (WA) 6102

chalkyhill Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 If you know the house you are moving into and how you will decorate then consider the UK - but if you don't know I would wait until you move in.
newjez Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 We bought our sofa at auction, (new stock - about seven years ago). It was about 30% reduction from what was offered in the stores. Might be worth looking around. Chalkyhill is right though, you don't want to repaint your house to match your furniture. Alot of houses in Oz aren't magnolia. They can get quite adventurous.
Har00n Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 New Jez: Couldn't help looking into your book via the link. Actually sounds really interesting! Anywhere in the UK i could buy a copy, (no kindle, and dont like buying online!)
tonyman Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 just remember everything is bigger here , we messed up bringing our beds over , the suits are lovely and always big sales ............

Anywhere in the UK i could buy a copy, (no kindle, and dont like buying online!) Sorry - I've only published on Kindle. If I can get enough sales and some good reviews I may get a publisher to print my next one. You don't need to buy a kindle - there is a free download - you just need a computer or compatible phone, DS XL etc http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000423913&tag=yahhyd-21&hvadid=70178591031&ref=pd_sl_11v6qirqy3_b Forgot to say - if you decide give it a read - please tell me what you think.
Guest mandyandbarry Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 Hi Ghost, We came over about 6 years ago and brought our DFS suite with us along with a lot of our belongings, simply because they cost us a lot when we bought them over there. If you need a new suite I would wait until you get here. There are loads of great furniture stores offering high quality stuff a decent prices, always sales and special offers on. Our suite cost us £3200 over 10 years ago from DFS which would be over $5000 , you can get a lot of suite here for that money and you don't have the hassle of shipping it over! Good luck, Mandy
friedparsley Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 Just so long as you dont go to Super A Mart. Cheap but Chinese. Their furniture falls to pieces. Just my opinion but I dont think the sofas and chairs here are as nice as in the UK. I cant find anything comfortable here. Harvey Norman seem to be selling a lot of low back sofas. Remember that they call a sofa a 'lounge' here. IMO if you have got a suite at home that you really like, then bring it with you. After it wears you can get it re-upholstered and recovered cheaper than buying new. Also if you have space in your container, bring it anyway.
newjez Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 I guess if the worst happens - second hand goods tend to hold their value in Oz. So if you want to get rid - you will get a reasonable price for it. Is ebay used much in Oz? It didn't seem that popular when we were over there.
Guest siamsusie Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 I use ebay a fair bit, particularly from Melbourne, I dont find the freight charges on larger items too prohibitive tbh. You just have to be careful I find, due to the distances involved. On many occasions items are cheaper to send from the UK than from Australia. Susie x
Guest Joedan Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 Hi, We were over there a couple of weeks ago and wondered the same thing. We had a look around some furniture shops and have decided its better to buy over here and ship it over. We are still taking the old one though as it may be needed to fill the house as the majority of them are much bigger. Hope this helps.
friedparsley Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 ALSO you need furniture for 2 rooms as most houses have a family room and a sitting room. So you would be up for 2 suites. Bring your own with you.
