Hi, I am a 45 year old Plumber / Electrician living and working in the UK.

I want to emigrate to WA but can only go skilled sponsored because of my age and need to get moving before July when the rules change and I won't qualify.

Can anyone give me advice on everything I need to get in place before I go so I don't stall the process please.

I'm thinking that it's best for me to go over and sell myself to prospective employers, is that the best option to secure sponsorship from a company...what's involved with securing state sponsorship ?

At the moment I have just completed the VETASSESS application and about to try and start the visa application.

I got married in WA in 2005 and have friends and family there and I'm really, really keen to get over for a new start with my family.

Any advice would be most welcome.

Hi there, welcome to PIO.

Bumping this up for you and enclosing the electrician thread as well

Our sister site, could also be useful for you

If you use your search button and insert "plumbing" there could be threads of interest for you there also.

Best wishes

The two options that you have are skilled migration and employer sponsorship.

At the moment you are too old for skilled migration, July actually helps you because the age limit will increase. The trouble is that you could struggle to meet the points requirement as there are no points for age. To explore this option further, take a look at the points test and see if you can meet the 65 points required. I am sure you are going to need to take IELTS and get 8 and you will need some kind of sponsorship state or family to get the required points as well.

If you cannot meet the points test, then that is ruled out for you and you will need to find an employer sponsor. I think that lots of trades are self employed though so this could be hard. I don't think that there is a "best way" of doing this, it is very difficult for most people so try everything. I think that flying out and hoping to meet people on their turf is a long shot, but I don't see many other options.

You should also bear in mind, that if you are offered a sponsorship it could be temporary visa. There is a very prevalent internet myth that temporary employer sponsored visas will convert to PR after a certain length of time, this is absolutely not true. You would need the employer to sponsor you again for a permanent visa and / or you would have to try again for skilled migration in order to get PR.

To be brutally honest, your timing might just prove to be a little bit off, if only you had thought of ita year or two year ago.

Hi,

Thanks for your input. You're right I have left it late but I am going to do everything possible to exhaust all avenues.

I want this soooo bad but it's down to fate in the end I guess, so fingers crossed.

Thanks again.
