Hi,

my hubby has just passed his vetassess trade exam, and we are about to apply for our visa. We are looking at western australia but not sure what part to migrate to, my husband is a electrician and we have 3 children from the ages of 6 to 12. Can anybody give us some advise on what areas in western australia would best suit us, as we do not know much about WA.

Perth is really your best bet in my opinion ... it has lots of suburbs and also is close to city to commute. lovely city very warm but beaches and lifestyle for family is superb. North suburbs are worth looking at like Hilarys and ocean reef. Also going over the bridge from perth south of river you have Fremantle.

We have some relatives who live in Ellenbrook (east of Perth). It's a rapidly expanding town with loads of houses, schools and other things being built. It's a lovely place too; we visited last August and really liked it. Brother-in-law a plumber and has never had a problem getting work over there :clown-biggrin:

yes I would agree that if you rent or buy in areas that are up and coming it may make sound financial advice in the long run. I know there are a few suburbs in east perth that are popping up and sound excellent. Just need to make sure your close enough to decent commutes and good shopping etc..

Thank you very much for your advise, its really helpful. We are aiming to be able to settle in a nice area suitable for familes, where hubby will have no problems finding electrical work. Can anyone clarify some thing else for me, we have just been told by some friends that have just returned from living in OZ, that you need to be able to drive to get your weekly groceries as these cant all be purchased under 1 roof for example Asda or Tescos, is this correct and if so does this make shopping a pain and more expensive.

We did our shopping at the local IGA and everything we needed was there so I'm not sure. Also there's Coles and Woolworths to shop at.

I think to answer your question about shopping under one roof. You can shop under one roof but depending on where u decide to live ... This is why its so important to live somewhere thats set up as a established town for me ... The problem with some of the suburbs are that theres road after road of houses and not much else.

Forgot to mention that scarborough is also a good area to base yourselves.

You will need a car, easpecially as you have kids. "Just down the road" could be a 20 min drive!

I would definitely say you need to be able to drive. I can't imagine not having a licence as I have to drive to do everything.

Depends where you live. We have an IGA (Independent Grocers association) supermarket at the local suburb shopping centre. Literally 2 minutes walk from the house. Everything we need is right there. It's open till 08:00 every night including Sat/Sun.

There is a massive shopping centre (whitfords) 5 mins away by car. All sorts of shops, food hall, movie theatre, restaurants, cafes, fashion shops, everything you could want really.

I see Ellenbrook got mentioned above. Nice suburb but for me, like a lot of the newer ones, is still lacking in infrastructure and it's quite a way to the beach from there and it may be that you would need a car to go shopping from there. It's a lot hotter during summer as the sea breeze doesn't get that far, not really near the train for getting into Perth, buses would be pretty unrealistic.

I have seen a few posts where people have felt a bit isolated in Perth and I could see why if you ended up in one of the newer suburbs. I guess you could feel a long way from anything, like you're on a building site and a bit lonely.

A lot depends on what you want out of life, your finances and if you have family in certain areas.

We live in a suburb close to the beach, have shops, cafes, restaurants, buses, train, Hillarys boat harbour all close by. We love the beach culture and are sporty, so it suits us perfectly. We love it here and would recommend it to anyone but I've also seen posts on here from people who hate Perth.

Takes all kinds to make a world.

The job situation for your hubby should be good too. My eldest (21) is an electrician, fairly newly qualified and has changed companies 3 times since finishing his apprenticeship last year. There is a lot of work around at the moment and if he is really keen on earning big dollars there is always the oil and mining sector to look at. A lot of the jobs are Fly in Fly out, so away from the family quit a bit. To balance that up though they are sometime 2 weeks on, 2 off, (or something like that).

Good luck.
