New TV Show - Poms In Paradise ITV

I quite liked the show tbh, sure it lacked a bit of meat (not literally as it did show a good barbie!) but frankly I'll watch anything aussie right now as seeing it helpe keep our dream alive and reminds me how much we love it there.

Re the woman you are all referring to (sorry I can't remember her or the families name) I just admired how much get up and go they had tbh, they were out enjoying life. Though tbh I did think the show seemed to be intentionally trying to paint them in a negative light with editing, that's life I suppose.

The only thing it left me with negatively, is once again how different it all is at todays rate and that left me a little sad, it seems we were so close but now so far from our dream. I reckon we could have afforded a water front home a couple of years ago (not sure when that family moved?) and whilst money doesn't buy happiness it certainly takes a lot of the pressure of when making an international move.

Looking forward to next weeks show :)

I have to say well done to Shocked for coming on and replying to the negative posts, looks like you're having a great time so good on you. When I was over here in the 90's I've driven on many a QLD beach (with a permit) to go camping and fishing and look forward to doing it again (was that N Straddie Mrs Shocked???). We've been here a year as well but in Sydney all I seem to have done is worked, hmm change of plan needed I think.

A few people have said they couldn't get the show here in Oz or missed it, so I've uploaded a copy - you can get it here, as its on a free file sharing site it will expire and be deleted in 21 days (so anyone reading this in June is too late). Don't select Premium download (it will pop up with an Ad or two - they need to make their money somehow), just wait for the minute to tick down and click Regular Download, I've tested it and it works fine - its an AVI file and will play on your PC using Windows Media Player (Mac folk - I recommend VLC), anyone using Linux needs no advice from me on playing media files. Experienced downloaders will burn to a disk or stream as I do. its 174MB so shouldn't break the download bank.

I just watched it & I thought it was not bad. I think some of the comments are a very harsh. The woman came across to me as getting out there & having a go. She seemed nice & clearly cares about her parents. Not chavvy at all I didn't think.

I was worried about watching it because I thought it might be a bunch of moaning wind bags going on about how expensive & rubbish Aus is & how they miss England. Sort of a video version of MBTTUK

The guys in it were good to getting stuck in & having a go.

I rarely come on the site now I live here but a friend messaged me to say how appalled she was at what she had read on here, and I now see why.

Lorraine and Marcus are two of the most welcoming and friendly people we have ever had the pleasure of meeting. A few random comments made during a 30 minute TV programme that has been edited from over 3 months of filming does not do them justice and can only be put down to bad editing.

Lorraine is NOT a professional sunbather! She works extremely hard for the lifestyle they have, but unlike most don’t go on complaining about it. To those who made such unpleasant comments about her physical appearance- post a picture of yourselves in a bikini and let’s see how fantastic you look. If you can look as great as she does in her 40’s after having a child then I would expect to see it as your profile picture rather than some of the shots I see here. Nick and Sez- do you want to show us what you look like? Or is the anonymity of a forum the best you can manage? I can only assume Helene that the kangaroos would look a damn site better in a bikini than you would! I would maybe consider swapping your “Angelic” face for a “Total Bitch” one. I assume you are one of the people who whines about the media making women paranoid about their image by making celebrities unrealistic role models, yet when you see a normal looking person are happy to bitch along with the other morons.

What do you want as an “average Brit”? The group of people I am friends with, of whom Lorraine and Marcus are two, consist of teachers, managers, IT professionals, nurses, electricians, tilers, admin staff and builders to name a few. We are also lucky enough to have numerous Aussie friends, who have come to the Gold Coast for the same lifestyle as us and love to socialise with us after equally hard weeks at work. Rent is high everywhere here and for little more than the rest are paying, they are lucky enough to have a fantastic waterfront home, which they share with all of us on a regular basis. Without their kindness, we would not know half of the people we do now, thanks to them arranging family friendly events and welcoming us into their home for BBQ’s and parties.

The Australian Tourist industry had nothing to do with the show. People were merely approached on social networking sites etc from the director/ producer to share their views of living in our area.

A waterfront house is more than achievable for a couple like Lorraine and Marcus, who both work hard in their respective professions, and are so highly regarded by their clients.

If the editing of this show has made people think that these guys are chavs, then the chavs in England must really have gone up in the world since I left a few months ago.

The beach they were driving down is one of the 4 x 4 beaches we have here. They are used mainly by the Aussie’s who love to go off-roading and are a fantastic day out as part of the Aussie outdoor lifestyle you all claim you want! Why is it when people have a bit of fun you start to criticise? I can only assume its narrow minded ignorance and jealousy. There are plenty of accessible beaches to sunbathe on- its a 4 x 4 beach because its not easily accessible for the tourists in their hire cars!

Do you really want a TV show devoted to watching Lorraine as she sits for hours upon end doing people’s books at the computer? Working during the day for her Aussie company then staying up most of the night to do the work her UK clients (who wouldn’t swap accountants because she is that good!) send her. The title surely is the clue- did you not want to see the nicer aspects of the move rather than the day to day grind?

Why you think “we” get a bad rep over here is beyond me. All Australians I have met love the “poms” and there is great banter between us. They know we have all come here to work and don’t sponge off the government, which is a problem here just like it is in the UK.

Jimithechew- loud? You know remote controls come with volume controls? I am pretty sure if you put it to a reasonable level you would hear them just fine. They couldn’t be less “loud” if they tried. Feel free to stay away from the Gold Coast. The country is more than big enough and I am sure you can find your block of paradise far away from us! Please, please find your block far away from us!!

Perth42- you see positives even in the negatives? Hmmm.... you clearly don’t! They have a teenage daughter who they moved to the other side of the world and family situations that were very difficult to leave behind, and they were sensible enough to say that if the new life was making them miserable they would be brave enough to go back. I hope the people you meet when you get here are less judgmental about you.

You have all based your nasty comments on a few snapshots of somebody’s life. Please remember-what we read about you people here on this forum is all we know about you. Read your comments. Would you want to be your friend based on what you have said here? I wouldn’t, and when you arrive here, people arranging events on this forum and others may be the only way you get to socialise!

Our lives are amazing here. We own a fantastic home with a pool, 5 mins from the motorway, 10 from the beaches and 5 from the theme parks. The people we have met are all fantastic fun loving, go getters, and we never have a weekend free! Work is work anywhere but to come home and enjoy what we have here is the reason we all came. Maybe the Gold Coast isn’t for everyone. It is a bit crazy at times. We are certainly far wilder here than we ever were in the UK. However, the people you criticise are practically family to us now. When we have a crisis, those moobs and bellies come straight over and help us. They treat us better than our own families do! When we feel down, those “loud mouthed chavs” are the first to sit and listen to us and cheer us up. They welcome every new, scared family with open arms and make you love them within an hour of knowing them. You get told to not judge a book by its cover. Don’t judge a person on their accent, their bodies or a few bits of editing.

What a really nice post. I would love to meet you all. You all sound like proper down to earth people.

Dear all,

Just wanted to say that I watched the show last night and am glad I left time for it to digest. I also was on another TV show, the one with the cards and put my faith in the team who were making it. However, when it was aired I was left feeling very disappointed, the editing had meant that events and things appeared a certain way, comments which were made in relation to other subjects were spliced to questions to make it all more dramatic.

I never came on here and moaned about it ( people however were not so vocal in their comments, maybe that was because I was already a member) I had to look at it as we got a free trip to Oz, the OH now wanted to go so for me the programme had served its purpose. I dont think shocked are moaning but until you take part in something like this you really dont know how you will be protrayed and that it would seems that lot of people can't comprehend that programmes are for entertainment.

I never understood before taking part in filming how events, personalities can be portrayed in such a different light, I really believed what you see is what happens; this is not the case at all.

So I would like to welcome shocked to PIO, most of the time its really lovely on here please continue to post I am sure a lot of us are interested in your story and how you get on in the future. I'm sure people cringed every time I opened my mouth with my dodgy south london del boy accent, you never sound like what you think you do.

Remember all it just fluff for TV and really nothing to get so worked up about, chill pill everyone please.

To all those that think we are Chavs's we came from Milford in Surrey (Not Farnham!!!!) and as I see one member lives in Surrey they will be aware of how expensive Surrey is too live in. Which is why we came here so our daughter would have a better lifestyle and be able to live in the area she is being brought up in. When you arrive and see the sort of house you can rent and buy, which is so different to what you can afford in the UK, you will understand that our house is very affordable to rent, but we wont be buying waterfront as we wont be able to afford it. .

As you have pointed out I do live in Farnham and yes I DO know how expensive it is to live in Surrey.

I never said you were a "chav" and would NEVER make a comment about someone's weight...this program protrayed you as someone who is more interested in her tan and laying on the beach and also the way it was edited did obviously did not do you justice and ended up a coming across as a "Katie Price in Essex" which is a shame

I do stick by the comment about sending your daughter home tho.....it made me laugh nothing more.....nothing less !!, it made me laugh....they edited it in a way that made me laugh and thats it.

I appologise for any upset that I may have caused you by my comment as I'm sure (hope) that other members will.

A very sorry....Lynne1266 :notworthy:

Good on you Shocked for coming on & defending yourself altho there is nothing to defend. Those who judge don't know the full picture, my Brother & family have had the hardest 2 years of their lives but now going into the 3rd all the reasons for leaving the UK are being achieved & like my Brother say's the family & friends they have left are never far from their minds but they love the gold coast, incidentally they are in Arundel.

I never took the p7ss, all i said was that the show doesn't give a true reflection and now that we know the place is a rental it makes sense but the show never said. It showed you as a family saying that you worked really hard and found it hard in the UK paying mortgage etc. The next thing on the show showed you in a nice gaff, pool, on the waters edge, sunbathing with champagne. It just makes people not in the know of prices think they can just move out there and buy a place like there.

It's the shows fault and i not once slagged your family off

The thing that I got from the programme was that whoever you are Australia is still the land of opportunity if you're willing to go for it. It was such a refreshing change from the dreary WUD which only seems to tell people that Oz is too much hassle and people would be better off not trying to change things.

As my mother always said ' If you can't say anything nice about the person, don't say anything at all'. I had applied to WDU but after reading all the negative and personnal comments, i'm having second thoughts. Or going on a crash diet but I must admit I thought you go girl when I saw the lady in a bikini, I'm sick of people thinking you have to be stick thin and under 20 to look good. As Gok would say its all about the inner beauty.

Well said.

I am 'shocked' at the amount of keyboard warriors on here. I wouldnt say anything on a forum that I wouldnt say to someone's face.

I thoroughly enjoyed the show and thought it was great how well the family had settled in, they seemed to be embracing life in Australia.

Sunbathing is free, you can buy cheap bubbly and 'home ownership' is irrelevant. Good on them for having the guts to go and the strength to stay, when they are so clearly missing their family in the UK.

Would like to say a big thank you to Peeka and Pinksuedeshoes for your defence on behalf of my family . It is very upsetting to read the comments that these people have written about us. But hopefuly those sort of people will not be allowed in to Australia and if they did get in then they would hate our lifestyle and return with their legs between their tails. As we are all aware you need friends out here as we have all left our familes back in the UK and all you guys have become part of our family and our lives are richer for knowing you all. I would like to point out that out house is a rental and you too could afford a house like this if you are lucky enough to get jobs when you arrive, but the Aussies do not like backstabbing Poms. I do apologise for the sound of my voice but there is not much I can do about that and I would be most grateful if you would like to chip in to provide me a tumy tuck as being in my 40's and had a child things to tend to go south.... We applied for our visa back in 2008 on a Wall and Floor Tiler 175 Visa which was on the CSL list, but even then when we first arrived you have to exchange your UK qualifications over to Australian equivelant, whch takes more time and money and you cannot get a job until you have done this. As a Wall and Floor tiler I leave home at 5.00 am in the morning to start work and all of this boring mundane work life has been filmed as well, but 1 tille looks like another after a while, so I am sure you will love watching that, which is most probably why it has not been shown! I am still studying to become qualified out here to the Australian Tax laws, but have got a daytime job with a a large Company and still work in the evenings doing my UK clients. When we said we would give it a year and if our daughter was not happy she could go back we meant as a family as our daughters happiness is the most important thing. She is happy and I am sorry to dissappoint you all thinking of coming over here but we are here to stay. With regard to "Chavs" driving on the beach as Peeka said you have to have a licence to do this and only on certain beaches. We do not sit around the pubs drinking at weekends but go out as a family and explore this beautiful country we live in. Not just beaches but the rainforests and surrounding areas. Our daughter has just been with us to the Great Barrier Reef snorkelling and diving for the first time ever in her life .With a group of 20 of us so we could all experience together. We all work very hard over here and our friends that we have made here Aussie and English are amazing, we all come from different areas and backgrounds but we dont judge you by your accent or because you have a double chin, or a fat belly, we all have worked and saved really hard to start a new lifestyle and have gone through the same situation to get here,so there is a bond and we surrport each other through the hard times, we could bore you with those as well, as there can be plenty of tears here as well, but then that would not be Poms In Paradise now would it? When you arrive I do hope you come here with your eyes wide open as it is hard work and with your judgemetal atttitudes you will not last long as people will drop you as soon as you start bitching! You will be very sad and lonely and miles away from your family.....

here here !!!! well said and absoultely brilliantly put . I am shocked that people on here are being this judgemental and to be honest it puts me off being a member when all some people can do is be nasty.

The show and broadcasting company need to be told that probably it has put this family in the wrong light and that makes me feel sad as am sure as a family you are all making the best life possible for yourselves.... its a shame that a proffesional company like ITV couldnt see that.. and show all sides of emigrating . I for one will not bother watching the next episode as it does not portray the correct story of emigrating.

I think that your family are just fine and stuff what other people think - I raise a glass to your honesty and admire your courage for making such a good go of your families future. All the best of luck and happiness to all of you

AND TO ALL YOU BACK STABBERS OUT THERE ( YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE ) SHAME ON YOU

Would just like to say a big thank you for your support and the private messages from you all. We were aware that the editing would not show exactly what was filmed but that is a risk you take. we took part in this so my family could see our lifestyle over here as unfortanetely my mother will never make it here to see us. They loved the show... we do work hard and we do play hard as well we lots of parties and girls night out which I think they will show in forthcoming episodes...I just think you wont see all the boring stuff that we have to do to live this loifestyle. My daughter done an interview about her thoughts and feelings on life here schools, friends the difference between UK schools and here but we dont know what will be shown or not shown. I am sorry that you will have to put up with seesing us again but this is how we live, I am a bit mad.... (old age) and thank god I got on the scales this morning and still weigh 9stone 3 so panic now over.... Thanks you for those that were big enought to apologise and if you wnt any background information we would only be happy to tell you...... We would always try to look out for new familes emigrating here and when the floods hit this country we let an Australian family stay with us until they could move back into their home. That is the sort of people you will meet over here and they would do the same back for you....

I think we all need to learn something from this...TV is TV and its all about ratings not reality !!!!!

Once again I appologise to you and your family, you must of had one of the worst days ever today.

It is all very well to say that the its the program makers fault that "Shocked" is portrayed in such a bad light but you must remember that they are the ones that signed up for it. She honestly cannot expect people not to comment about her tummy if she runs about in a bikini accentuating it, surely other attire would have been more suitable.

As for the 4x4 racing up the beach 2 abreast honking their horns, I'm pretty sure that the powers that be would not be impressed by such behavior. Beaches in South Africa were closed to 4x4's for the very same thing, I'm sorry but as a 4x4 enthusiast myself I cannot condone driving that will put my chances (one day when I eventually get to OZ) of using the beach at risk.

I feel pretty disappointed in the show, and I'm pretty sure it is why the participants of the show have taken so much Flak. It definitely feels as if the DIAC is paying for it. I for one am pretty sick of seeing a sugar coated version of Australia and fake crisis's that the film makers create, honestly how many times can one take the stereo typical "Johnny" or "Jane" that at age 4 to 16 that wants to go home (not in this show yet but on WDU etc), as well as everyone bawling their eyes out because they are homesick, yes as an expat myself I have had my "Moments" but do we really have to see it on every ozzie migration show! Note to producers: we get it, we are going to get homesick!!!!!!!!!!!!

I want to see typical Oz, show me what the places look like. The real cost of living, not the A$ 600 000 houses that I will not be able to afford. How about a show on the education system, walk us through, it first day of school to uni graduation, options like Tafe, unis, colleges etc. Show us Large cities in each state and the landscape. Throw in some of the problems that Australians uniquely face. Otherwise at least give us some documentaries on the culture, history, technology and nature related to OZ.

It would be great if you stayed around on the forum and gave us your insight of life Down Under. I think you were very brave to go on TV, it's not something we would ever consider and unfortunately with fame you always get criticism, even if you were a size 6 and the best figure in the world there are people who would still find fault, unfortunately, that's life. I think we all need to learn something from this...TV is TV and its all about ratings not reality !!!!!

I cottoned on to this years ago :cute: I think many other people did also. I can still remember the reality show Sylvania Waters and recall it was one of the most watched and talked about shows in TV. But talked about. Not internet talked about.

10, 15, 20 years ago most of us would have sat at home on our sofa, watched the show, shared our thoughts privately with whoever was there and maybe with some friends the next day and that would have been it pretty much. O and the tabloids and magazines having a bit to say on occasion. Now we simply sit with our phone in hand, text or tweet, log into a forum and post or write in our blogs. And anyone can read it. Its instant and very few people think about any consequences to this.

I think most people get what this sort of TV show is about now but its the modern age with technology where everyone is a critic. We've The Apprentice, Big Brother, Masterchef, The Only Way Is Essex and goodness knows how more. Have you read what people say about people taking part in those on forums/twitter/FB etc? Harsh words are often said.

I said earlier in this thread that I felt this show would be a bit of a hatchet job and not really more than fluff. And it was pretty much that for a first episode. Hopefully as the weeks go on there will be a bit more substance to it but I'm not expecting things to change much. ITV have set the tone of the show in the first episode and alas editing has once again done its job.

your in for a real shock when you get here then, most beaches with 4x4 access are like a bloody highway, you have to cross the beach like a road when going from the dunes to the sea, and nothing you can do or say will change it, its a shame but thats how it is here, speed limits often get ignored, beaches are like streaming highways as the tide drops and every man and his dog heads up them.

I will tell you what ............... me and the wife were so buzzing at this show, we watched it again last night, how positive it was, showing the fantastic coast line and it even made the bush look inviting that she said ............... we could be there.

Anyone who knows me, knows it is me the Ropey HOFF who is the driving force behind trying to emigrate and the wife is 50/50 but she got a boost watching this show and this lady and her family were the main thing that gave her a buzz, her family is what we mostly connected with, the great house with a pool the outdoor lifestyle, the upbeat positive thoughts and comments from them, made the wife say she is still seriously thinking about it and i would just like a big thanks.

I have to say I did love the bit in the rain forest that was mega - what a guy on a mission ! and yes I can see that there were very positive elements about the show as I too watched back again - however I think you do need to show a variable sides as well like the mundane stuff - after all thats what people will be doing most of the time.
