Guest stoorob
When looking for a place to rent in Melbourne, do you think it's important to only look at places that have air con? Or can you get by without it during the summer? Cheers, Stu
calNgary
Hi I'm in Qld and have managed for the last 4 years with ceiling fans. We do have air con but have only used it a handfull of times, we find it brings on the sniffles and prefer the windows open and fans on. RockDr
We've only used our aircon a couple of times this year in Adelaide. If you don't have it, fans are great (and you can drape strips of damp cloth in front of the fan to give a cooling effect) or you can get portable cooling units. PontePom
We're in Qld and have had to have the aircon on maybe 6 hours this summer if that even. Loads of fans though and they're great. I'd say it's an advantage to have the option of aircon but not a must have if you see a property without it. Howard
Guest alison and Simon
Hi Im about 1hr 45 from melbourne and we wouldnt suggest properties without aircon. We are fortunate to have the four seasons in victoria  but although this year not been as hot, usually need the aircon when in the house. Do have ceiling fans in the bedroom and they are on at nite and manage OK.

Eera
Depends if it's a new build or an old one; old ones are generally designed with higher ceilings and breezeways (you can open both ends of the house to catch the prevailing breeze). New builds generally are put up with no thought to the surrounds and are way warmer. You don't have much humidity in Melb so fans are quite effective.
