Cost of living / Salaries

downunder

Recommended Posts

Hi There,

Been reading some thread's about salaries in Australia. The general impression I get is that most people seem to think it is unrealistic to live on anything below $150000 (for a family of 4, as an example).

Is there anyone here on a salary of say $50000 and surviving?

What type of occupations have these people who are earning $150k plus (one person's income not two)?

I think it depends on your profession and family size.. I have a friend in Perth that tells me some things are cheaper and other things are far and away more expensive. Diesel is cheaper and they tell you everyday on local radio where the cheapest fuel is but supermarkets are more dear than over in the UK.

Myself and partner are being sponsored for a job in construction and we will hopefully have a bit of income that will be disposable.

Again it depends on what you do for a living .. size of family etc.... its swings and roundabouts in my opinion.

Where are you now downunder?

$50,000 is worth about £22,000 if you use the $2.2 to £1 wage equivalent rate and i think a family of four would struggle anywhere on that sort of money.

Well, I'm in Ireland and the current exchange rate is 1.34 for Euro.

So at current exchange rates $50k is equal Euro 37,300, which is an okay salary in Ireland.

Plus I've been to Australia and it's no more expensive than Ireland.

What is the national average salary in Aus?

But even 37k euro for a family of 4 is tough going in Oz I reckon .... if there were 2 salaries maybe that would be ok but it seems pretty low to me.

You have to bare in mind that 50k after tax doing some quick head sums would be a take home of around ... 32k - = $2400 per month. Rental 3 bed house dependant on area will be $1200 per month before bills ... see where we are going with this ?????

18k tax/stoppages out of 50k,whats the tax rate in oz?

okay so it would appear that tax is not as simple as we think in Oz ........... so here we are.

between $80k and $180 you pay back to the government $17.850 lump sum - and then 0.38c for every dollar earn t over $80k

SO EXAMPLE : Salary gross . 130k - total tax payable = $36.850

Of course remembering you also have medicare costs on the top of this.

Hope I explained that okay but gives you a rough idea

Where I live in the Uk (South Wales) I know plenty of families who live on £22K or a bit less. I think it depends on the lifestyle you are use to.

Forget about comparing Aussie tax to UK tax. Even if you are an employee you can deduct a shed load of expenses, its more like the USA system. I have a good friend already over there, in the Army (so definitely an employee), he employs a tax specialist for about $100 a year and even claims this fee back against his tax! I won't list all the deductions but here's a link that may give you an idea of whats possible:

Tax tips for tough times for individuals and the self-employed in Australia - Global Financial Crisis

I've seen these posts about people worried if they'll earn enough so I asked another friend whoI will be earning exactly the same as if I'll be 'comfortable or scraping the pennies', he says definitely comfortable (thats on $80000)

So reassurance can be had if you find someone else on the same wage as you and if you are lucky they may share information with you about how they get by

Cheers
