Maybe- We have applied for Melbourne pending a positive skills test- fingers crossed.

Although our 1st choice is Perth- what's the construction sector like out there at the moment- busy?

Hi Chippy,

We are from Essex and are planning to move to Perth (1st choice) and Victoria (2nd choice). We are at the beginning stages so are still unsure what visa we will end up with!

Whereabouts in Essex are you?

Leigh on sea, although it's closer to Rayleigh ( Kent Elms corner) just of the 127...

And you?

Really depends on what you do within construction, my OH is a cabinet maker and is busy within the shop fitting company he is with, generally houses are going up like nobodies business therefore brickies and tradies in general are in good demand.

I'm a carpenter by trade but I've moved into site/ project management.

I mainly deal in Fit- out projects - offices, banks etc.

Not a million miles from you, we live in Rayne which is about 10 mins from Stansted airport.

My husband is a vehicle painter, trades like his, building, plumming, carpentry and electricians are all in demand down under.

How far are you down the line of you visa app?

What can I say, cant really compare it to elsewhere as i've not yet been out of Victoria, we have family in Noosa who came out last year, originally from Clacton and they are loving every minute of it as are we down here. We made the move for a better lifestyle for our family who are not really techno heads and do not enjoy sitting on games, computers and consoles, we love the outdoors. There is hardly ever a weekend when there is not a festival or function on thats worth visiting, or even fantastic places to visit. I feel we also got lucky when buying our house as the street is always full of children playing as its a grove, so no thru running traffic, and constant socialising occurs between neighbours, with BBqs and cricket matches in the roads. My kids have never had the opportunity to play outside ALONE until we cam here. Dont get me wrong there are still risks involved, but feels more like when i was a child back in the 70s/80s. Bikes, scooters and go karts galore along with good old dirt and mud!!

I know not everyone feels the same and I believe some areas are different, however we know that we are where we are meant to be! If that makes sense.

Any questions feel free to ask and keep in touch.

Process of elimination really between where the work was and cost of living and property. we needed to be where the work was for the tradies, especially cabinet maker, when we came out 2 and 1/2 years ago there was next to nothing on the west of the city and more on the Eastern sides especially moorabbin and Dandenong, so we had a starting point, after the initial stay at Carrum Downs, OH secured a job in Dandenong. We wanted to be central to everything, not to far from beach and city but also not to far from the Dandenong ranges, reserves and also the ski slopes in winter, therefore opting for the SE suburbs. :jiggy:

So did you go into rented and then start looking for work? Would you recommend the relocation services or did you do it alone?

We have 2 young children so would have to look into schooling, my hubby is a car sprayer so obviously we would need to go where the work is but need to know that our budget would get us somewhere decent, I know that the dollar isnt as strong as it used to be so its all very hard to research where to start havng never been!

Did you settle well in Oz? I feel that it is so long away so it doesnt seem real yet!

Did you go out on a 175 visa?

Sorry for all the questions!!

Don't worry about the qustions, keep em coming and will try and help as much as poss. x

We didnt use any agents to obtain the visa but we did use MOVING TO MELBOURNE as a package who collected us from the airport, supplied the rental house, car loan, internet, invaluable info and fantastic service, (Does that sound good enough Kate x )

But honestly, having a contact at the airport when landing and seeing a friendly face even tho we had never met was invaluable for us. Peace of mind if you like.

From when we obtained the visa, for approx 9 months before we actually left, I was subscribed to the jobs and careers email alerts and advised them all of our skills and arrival dates, it made an initial contact and even secured a couple of interviews, the remainder said contact on arrival which we did and in our 1st week of arriving I'd arranged approx 6 interviews for my OH, forgot to mention we came on the skills permanent residency visa, seems so long ago I cant remember the number!! lol

The house supplied by Kate was a 4 week furnished rental, supplying everything you would need, in that time we searched for a normal rental and sgned up for 12 months. After 2 months couldnt stand paying rent and wanted my own nest to settle into, thats when we decided to buy!

Our girls were 8 when we moved and altho school was of high importance, compared to the schools where we were they were all an improvement! They seemed to settle the best to begin with, straight into school where they were friendly and accepting. OH also settled because of work and getting back to normal. I was adament to be a lady that lunches, however that only lasted 6 months until money was tight and boredom set in so I now work 3 days a week and lunch and zumba the other 2!

Words of wisdom, still doesnt feel real now!!! Sometimes we sit as normal in the evening and think 'Good god are we really on the other side of the world?'

Have added you, seems like you already know some of our rellies!! lol

Now then weather!! to be honest we feel a lil chilly in Autumn and are cold in winter, however we have acclimatised, but saying that I think we were still cold when we 1st arrived! We actually like the 4 seasons and wouldn't suit the hot hot all the time with humidity, as now in the summer the girls complain its too hot to play outside as we cant be at the beach all the time!! Also what with the natural disasters we feel we are in the right place. In winter i have worn a body warmer and scarf, but never a full coat and gloves etc!! Obviously we wear our full clobber up the snowy mountains in winter when sking and sledging which is only 2 hours away, so we leave around 5ish and come home late giving us a full day on the slopes, Amazing!!

With regards to good suburbs, there are many. Really depends on how far youd like to be from the city, coast and work and what your budget will be?
