Glad I Moved
we have friends who left debt from loans in the uk and there familys were traced through baliffs talking to there old neighbours and they even found out where the hubby used to work Baliffs don't do this. Baliffs are court appointed officials and only go out when a court order has been made against a debtor at a specific address with the sole purpose of siezing assets from that address. They may well have been traced by a debt collection agency (which is a completely different thing) for whom calling neighbours, family etc is a fairly commonly used tactic to try to find errant debtors. Unless the debt was for something other than unsecured bank loans or credit cards, as soon as they found out your friends were in Australia (and presumably had no intention of paying these debts) they ought to have realised they were wasting their time due to the reasons I described a while ago. I do, however, fully support your general point about coming to Oz with little or no financial reseerves to draw upon in those first few months. Piling up debt is no way to begin a new life in a foreign country. If all the ads on the TV are right, there's plenty of time for that later!
