rockola57 883 Posted February 23, 2011 Me and the wifey poos have acquired access to a load of the latest WDU progs, and have noticed a distinct change in the tone of the series. When we watched this with Nadia Allswell haha a few years ago,it was decidedly positive, portraying a land of Milk and Honey there for us all ,which ultimately resulted in us being here.I am not complaining either,as i like it here. However, the later series with the blond girl presenter,is a different kettle of fish.It seems to paint Australia as a not so attractive place to live, due to the costs involved. The very tone from the outset is negative, like"Would you leave your loved ones"Would you take such an uncertain chance""Could you live with"etc. Then the TV company appear to seek out families who are not seriously focused on emigrating, but are willing to see what it's all about, with the inevitable outcome, given that they are often quite comfortable in the UK.It's all political in my opinion, all of a sudden the emphasis is on Stop the Brain Drain!!!!You can fool some of the people all of the time,BUT!!!!:wink:
Guest melbish35 Posted February 23, 2011 I agree with you. We are hoping to move out to Perth at the end of this year, pending our Visa! We have decided to stop watching it, as it has become so negative!
BrisDubBris 299 Posted February 23, 2011 If you based your decision on series 5 of WDU, no one would go. They paint it as nearly impossible to get a decent house & I find the messages from loved ones tacky & staged.
Guest HavenMarra Posted February 23, 2011 Totally agree - we've stopped watching too. I get annoyed at the bit where they have a budget and then get shown houses they can't afford. I keep thinking - "should you not have thought of that earlier - of course it is far away and you are leaving everything - did you not realise?".
tdk43 61 Posted February 23, 2011 Totally agree, we are a family of three, just at the beginning of the immigration process, but have too stopped watching the programme. Firsty, we are hoping to move to Perth, but in watching the series, they have never been to Perth as far as I know. They also seem to view really poor houses that are for sale. We have stopped watching the programme, and have been enjoying watching Phil Down Under, who seems ever positive. BrisDubBris 299 Posted February 23, 2011 Can anyone explain to me why they say if Fred & Ginger get X for their house in the UK they will have a budget of Y. Usually a low amount & they show them 1 dump, 1 pretty average & 1 OK house. Then they do the cost of living comparison & they show a mortgage for both places. I assumed the goal was to not have a mortgage & that is why the budget is so low?
Guest Esme Posted February 23, 2011 The only reason i watch is to get more info and insight into Oz, I know I want to go and not fussed about the negativity! I love watching the part on houses and lifestyle as thats why were moving there, Phil down under has been great i just wish there were more Oz focused programmes
BrisDubBris 299 Posted February 23, 2011 I have quite enjoyed this series of Phil down under.
Guest HavenMarra Posted February 23, 2011 Yup - I'm a fan of the Phil too but still waiting for him to reach Brissy.
BrisDubBris 299 Posted February 23, 2011 Yup - I'm a fan of the Phil too but still waiting for him to reach Brissy. Me too. I think his show is of far more use to people than WDU is.
Guest paganscorpio Posted February 23, 2011 I too have noticed how much the show has changed and feel they are trying to portray a negative image. Phil Down Under is also a bit negative in my view - the humungous budgets these people have are bound to get them the best houses! How about showing some of us mere mortals and investigate the rental side of things in 2 bed flats (units) for a change?:nah:
BrisDubBris 299 Posted February 23, 2011 I think someone posted that series 5 of WDU will be the last one. Does anyone know if that is the case?
Guest HavenMarra Posted February 23, 2011 My PVR (bizarely) did not record the 2 Brissy episodes (S5) - does anyone know where I can see them - iplayer keeps saying they are not working. I know I said I stopped watching but I wanted to see the Brissy ones for the houses and areas. Hoping to looking at rentals this time next month (457 willing). Maybe the researchers at the bbc overlooked this site judging by the crap they've shown on WDU. regards Derren
Guest HavenMarra Posted February 23, 2011 Cheers derren7 - been all over there and domain - just wanted to see what delights Nicky was going to show the families on the 2 recent Brissy episodes. Can't believe iplayer wouldn't show them.
munchbaby99 1,313 Posted February 23, 2011 I have watched it from the beginning and take it for what it is. It's true it has turned negative and I have no idea why they always show houses way above budget it's a joke. I always like to see the different areas that they show. As for the whinging rellies, they just get on my nerves trying to guilt the families, of course they are thinking it through and not making rash decisions. They will of course miss people back home but it's a decision they have come to. Ok rant over Hoping for a move to oz in the coming year or two.......hoping not three! Ken 1,815 Posted February 23, 2011 My PVR (bizarely) did not record the 2 Brissy episodes (S5) - does anyone know where I can see them - iplayer keeps saying they are not working. I believe the problem with iplayer is somehow connected to the fact that transmission of the episodes was delayed from when they were originally scheduled to be broadcast (was supposed to be 2nd or 3rd week of January but weren't broadcast until Mid February). Whether this was due to the BBC being sensitive about the floods in Queensland or to technical problems with the recordings I don't know. If the latter might explain why they still don't work on iplayer. All the links I've found to the programmes take you back to the non-functioning iplayer. munchbaby99 1,313 Posted February 23, 2011 Ok rant not quite over, I think both programmes are missing a trick by not showing rentals, I'm guessing a lot of people coming over will want to rent first - I know that's what I'll be doing! Hoping for a move to oz in the coming year or two.......hoping not three!
Guest guest37336 Posted February 23, 2011 Hi Rock. I have said it before that I think the programme has changed somewhat and not for the better, but I 'think' to some degree it has never been the same since Nadia left . She had a real personality, a great laugh, cared, and lets face it, what a gorgeous woman :wubclub: she is, just my opinion is all mate. Cheers Tony.

Mandy28 1,590 Posted February 23, 2011 Ok rant not quite over, I think both programmes are missing a trick by not showing rentals, I'm guessing a lot of people coming over will want to rent first - I know that's what I'll be doing! Hoping for a move to oz in the coming year or two.......hoping not three! I know what you mean about the renting part. When and if we get in! I am planning on renting for a minimum of a year so I can have a good look around and decide where I want to live. I have been to Australia seven times (Family ties) and know the East coast and WA fairly well, but I'm well aware that visiting and living there are totally different things. I want to take my time looking for a house, making sure I can tick all the boxes and just not make do. On another note, I do think if they Replaced Nicki Chapman with a cardboard cutout on WDU no one would even notice. I also agree show more Rentals. Good luck with your Visa 176 Family Visa GSM. Leach Family 10 Posted February 23, 2011 I agree totally with all comments about WDU, its not put us off though! Agree with the lack of rentals too, as im sure this is what the majority of us need when first arriving in oz? Many of the families i have watched on WDU, havent thought the move through enough or aren't serious about making the move, which seems to me to be a waste of programme. We have visited oz three times Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne and we know oz is for us, were just finishing paper work for assesment. Many of the families on WDU have never visited oz and dont know what each state has to offer them, so if they dont know, how can 'Nicky Chapman' decide where is best for them? Oz is a big place and whilst were not keen on Melbourne and love Brisbane, others i'm sure will disagree, you need to chose an area which is best suited to your families needs. If the families on WDU had more information first and were able to chose an area to visit based on this, i think the outcome maybe more positive for some families. Guest Posted February 23, 2011 I think it's a good thing to show some negatives otherwise some people would just see Oz as the perfect place then be disappointed when they get there to find its not all a bed of roses. I liked watching WDU for the entertainment value, and found it quite funny how naive some of the people on it were. I don't think anyone would just decide to go there after watching that sort of programme anyway, you obviously have to do a lot more research before making such a big decision. It would have been good to see more rentals in it though, I only saw one, not sure if it was in OZ or NZ.
THE HULLS 10 Posted February 23, 2011 Hi, yes we've been watching too, i think for the interview to get on the programme one person must not want to move, just go for a free holiday, Why do they bring them to a house way above the lifestyle/house that they have in the UK then say but you couldnt afford this!! When we go we will rent and then maybe buy after a year,or maybe never buy. The best one was the guy living in a tiny house in UK who kept saying their Furniture would'nt fit in the bigger OZ houses, we laughed.
