ICT Skills assessment & RPL

Recommended Posts

Hi all

we have finally started on the the visa application process & have been reading up a lot here & on the immi site.

I need to get my skills assessed by the ACS, I dont have a degree but have 10+ years of experience so will have to go down the rpl route .

Has anyone here any experience of this ? I would really appreciate some pointers .

Looking forward to chatting here with y'all.

Hi,

Yes, Without educational qualification you need to go via RPL, why don't you think about certifications like MCTS?

If you have such a certificate , you will be eligible under group B

What information are you after? I needed 6 years of Prior Learning and I got assessed earlier this month.

Hi,

We're also having to go down this route as my husband doesn't have his degree in his area of work. What is the certification you are talking about here? IT isn't my area of expertise but I have to keep pushing my husband along the RPL path, otherwise he'll never do it and we'll never get there! Failure not an option.

I completed an RPL last January as I did not have a degree but over 10 years experience in ICT.

I gained a positive assessment for my nominated speciality however it was rather tough.

Using the provided documentation I had to trawl through my memory and old work douments (inc emails) to write up how I had done this or that etc. Also any vendor qualifications are very helpful to ilustrate skills provided they are explained in context with details on how they applied to specific tasks and/or jobs.

Its a tough ask to do but certainly a positive experience from my point of view as having a third party validate my experience and skills was worth it even though I never used the assessment for a visa.

Thanks everyone for the replies - I really appreciate it !!

I have a couple of questions :

-if you apply to ACS as an ICT Business Analyst & they deem your experience etc to be more correctly aligned with Network Engineer (for example), are you rejected or do they deem you suitable based on the alternative occupation

-also what is the relevance of Group A & B, I dont understamd the implications of being in either Group.

Finally, a much broader problem for me is that I am a self employed contractor working for the same client for years - cant obviously supply as 'client list' as only have one client & cant approach them for job description validation as my work would dry up :arghh:

Has anyone any experience of this ?

Thanks all

Please note this is my experience and understanding only - I'm not an agent or particularly knowledgable about Oz Immigration. Having said that:

I believe if you are rejected for the category you apply for you are rejected - they will not deem you suitable against another category.

Group A or B refers to whether you have qualifications or RPL - I don't think it has any material differences.

With regards to your single client, I have 2 suggestions.

1) Ask for a reference in order to 'get more business' (unless they are employing your services based on the fact they are your only client).

2) A simpler way would be to do a statutory declaration form - this is a legal document with specified wording, that essentially swears you are telling the truth. It will also need to be signed by a solicitor. Back this up with whatever details you can (payment slips, emails / contracts from your client etc), and it could be enough.

Thanks NeilEB for the reply.

Theres such a lot of info - anyway am sifting through it all bit by bit.

Can I ask how long did it take you to get the ACS assessment - did it go over the 12 weeks due to the RPL & also they they request additional information or was your submission uber comprehensive ?

Am trying to figure out the best approach - thanks

It went slightly over, but that was mainly due to me forgetting the project write-ups...doh!

But it was pretty much 12 weeks on the dot

Hi

My ACS assessment took bang on 12 weeks. You'll receive an acknowledgment mail when they assign it to a assessing officer, you can then log on and check its progress.

My RPLs took about the same to write. The ACS look for what you've learnt over your time in IT and not simply what qualifications you have. They assess you on the Core Body of Knowledge.

Make sure you write your reports explaining, in detail, your exact roles during projects and what you learnt etc.

I have a number of examples of RPLs which might give you an idea.

IELTS Aug 09 > 8.0 > Skill Assessment 25 Apr 10 > Applied VIC SS 15 Nov 10 > SS Approval 04 Apr > 176 lodged 14 Apr > CO: Assigned 10 May > Medicals 04 Jun > Referred 01 Jul > finalised 25 Jul > Visa 26 Jul > Fly 6 Feb

Hi yoyo333

Thanks for the feedback - its great hearing other peoples experiences. Yes I would love to take a look at the sample RPLs (I'll send you a pm) - I've been working quite a while now so working out here what to focus on. I guess it will probably take me about three months to get it all together also, its tiring sitting down to do this after a days work but needs must !!!!

Thanks again.
