Your case officer will request when you are required to do your medicals. But yes, if you've got / had any conditions its good to get information from the consultants who have treated you.

When diagnosed.

Treatment been on...still on if any.

How long

Prognosis

That kind of stuff....anything to assist.

Hope that helps

Hi, I know it's been a long time since you wrote this but i presume you got through your Medicals okay? I too have Crohn's and was wondering if this would be a problem (before we commit 8k in visa fees etc...) I have been off any treatment since 2005 & have been well since 2000.

many thanks

Hi deedee, I have Ulcerative Colitis and it didn't stop me getting the visa. It does depend on what medication you are on as some of the stuff prescribed for advanced UC and Crohns can be quite expensive (and that's what it comes down to: how much are you going to cost to to the Oz health system!). If you are stable at the moment then I would say that's a good time to apply for visas and plan ahead and ask your consultant for a letter to take to your medicals, I would do this two or three months before you expect the call to medical as NHS consultants can be a bit slow to issue these letters. The letter just needs to say what treatment/medication you are receiving and the longer term prognosis. From what you say about being well since 2000 I don't think you will have any problems at all.

If in doubt, run your case past a MARA agent who specialises in medical issues. There are a few about. And if you are concerned, it may well be worth using an agent with expertise in this area. Assuming you don't already have an agent that is :)

Hi Kidsammyc, You sound like you are in a very similar situation to when I applied.  I'm not familiar with mazlivant, I assume it is a brand of mesalazine?  If so, I take the same drugs but a higher dosage of Imuran (azathioprine).  It didn't cause a problem for me on the medical, but I can't stress strongly enough how important it is to be prepared.  Discuss your plans with your gastro consultant and ask him to prepare a letter describing your condition, medication and current situation.  Get the letter addressed to "whom it may concern" but sent to yourself so you can take it with you.  The drugs you take aren't particularly expensive so the Australian authorities won't be worried about that and if the letter from your consultant says that you are stable then that's a pass.  If you turn up at your medical without the letter they will write to your consultant and ask for the details and that could delay things by months and put doubt in their mind.  It's much better to get passed on the day with no queries.

If there's anything else I can help with just let me know.

Hi,

My situation is slightly different as I haven’t had medication for years. I was diagnosed with crohns 15 years ago, had operations & took mesalazine for about 7 years following this. I did get a letter from my surgeon, who’d done my operations over 15years ago & my GP, on the advice of a forum. Passed medical.. Had no problems & no delays. Good luck!

I think you'll be fine regarding the UC.  It is a bit on the doctor's discretion, but I don't think there is any more you can do.  We all worry about the medicals so you're not alone.  Good luck, and hope it goes well for you.

Thanks for that. I am a roofer which is a physical trade in which im sponsored in & my boss knows about my uc, so working full-time & paying tax. I don't take time off, i go to the gym as well so can hardly say im unfit to pass the medical. The only reason i had a flare in the first place is I ran out of meds in Australia & didn't understand the health care system by this time was too late. My gp letter refers this. Been in remission ever since flare lasted 10 days, been completely fit & healthy for over 12 months.  I really hoping I don't get refused. Im terrified. Thanks for your insight.

I'm sure they'll consider that.. A lot of people have something wrong with them, they can't not let everyone in with a medical condition. Try not to worry, although I know it's easier said than done. The Dr wasn't phased by my Crohns diagnosis... Maybe take a reference from your boss stating how little sickness you've had, I did this but can't remember if it was needed. Good luck!!

For us, the physician told us that if we hadn’t heard anything from them in 2 days, then we can assume all is well.

On the second day after the medicals, our agent informed us they had been uploaded and finalised on the system.

Good luck!

Just a note that our experience with medicals was in London as we are applying off shore. Reading back, Not sure if you’re in aus? If so, then it may be different for you. Also the waiting times may vary depending on where you had it done.

It is a worry, which I think everyone goes through, even if there’s no reason to!
Try not to think about It too much.
If you used the emedical system, you can also log on there to check which tests are competed if any

We didn’t really find out until we got our Pr visas granted in April (had our Medicals done in January) but we had a new born daughter in December, who we added to the visas & she had to have her medical at the end of February so it may have delayed our grant.. if it helps mine was processed straight away while my partner’s took longer on the system to process (he’s had a past slipped disc & psorrihosis) & it was mine we were worried about. Hopefully you’ll hear sooner but try not to worry, I just had in my head that everything happens for a reason & there’s nothing you can do now. I’m sure it will be fine, let us know how you get on. Good luck!!
