Wonderful countryside Fantastic pubs and the beer that goes with them Lovely friendly people All our friends The history The freedom to persue my hobby (business) Villages Lots of things for our kids to do Did I mention the beer ? Guest famousfive Posted February 5, 2011 Share Posted February 5, 2011 I'm looking forward to- Speaking my first language again[Gaeilge] The fresh smell of the Atlantic Ocean Family and friends A night at the pub listening to some Irish music Not wearing summer clothes all the time Less rules,regulations and licences for everything Seeing my kids happy and carefree again Being my own boss again People getting my sense of humour A connection with the history that surrounds me And.....not needing an expats forum. Having family just around the corner Family dinners Family coffee stops Lots of nieces and nephews around Seeing my children with grandparents Seeing my parents watch my children grow National Trust Castles Countryside Stone walls M & S underwear Proper pubs Country lanes Villages Thatched cottages English accents Being close to beautiful places in the Med/Europe Summer nights staying light till late Sitting in the garden drinking wine with neighbours whilst still light till late Cheap fast internet providers (It may have changed in AU now) The colours of Autumn Acorns Squirrels Fabulous free small schooling No pressure for private insurance No pressure for private schooling Free dental treatment for me and my children (Im a mature student now) Me studying and getting a student grant My coal fire Radiators My hairdresser Next A roast on Christmas day when its not hot outside Not having to rely on A/C Sleeping without being too hot Street lighting No hoons English biscuits English crisps Being able to park my car anywhere and not having to look for shade to park in Not worrying about redbacks (We had a huge problem with them) Not worrying about magpies attacking Not worrying about my children running around in the garden barefoot (I was totally paranoid in AU) Shall I continue? I could easily! I must say - these are MY thoughts and in no-way expect everyone to agree, but also must say - they are not to put AU down, they are what I looked forward to on return to my mother land. Just to make it a bit clearer Chris. A returnee is someone who returns back to their homeland after a long absence. Which I have done on several occasions by the way, each time for reasons OTHER than WANTING to return. So my opinion is as valid as any other returnees. Just because I have gone back to Australia does not mean that I have NEVER been a returnee, because simply returnee does NOT mean a permanent move. And I am very serious in my opinion. The thing that I looked forward to the most was returning to Australia, that is not to say that I viewed this country with any degree of negativeness, just a want to return to Australia as soon as the family problems this end had been sorted is all. I returned home last week and your above comments sums up totally all the things that are important to us as a family. Oz isn't for everyone we all have different desires and we seem to get ridiculed for it on here when we realise where we truly want to be and see where our future lies. I have a large part of my family who have lived in Oz for 20+ years and love it and I am happy for them. It is nice to see posts when other people appreciate similar things to yourselves. Quoll Posted February 6, 2011 Share Posted February 6, 2011 I'm not returning but would still like to add my 2c worth I always look forward to, in no particular order: The variety of pretty much everything The green greeeeeeen grass that gives under your feet (note I said grass, not rough fescue which passes for grass around here) The colours of the seasons as they pass Being able to walk down a street and see a thousand years of human endeavour on almost any street corner (Milton Keynes excepted of course!) Being able to live in a house that keeps the cold out Living in a place which doesnt have an adolescent "we are the best" mentality ie a bit of humility Being with people who have a sense of humour I can relate to Good telly Cheap books BOGOFs Being able to spend a weekend in a place which is accessible and so totally different from the place I spend the every day grind The patchwork of the countryside West End theatre Shakespeare at Stratford Being able to do family history in person and not always stuck on a computer to do it Stitchers get togethers Park and Ride buses Wildlife that doesnt attack you and doesnt sound like landing jumbo jets at ungodly hours of the morning That'll do for starters, I am sure I will think of some more Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I have to say this is the most posts that I have had to remove from a 2 page thread. Now the title is "What are you looking fwd to most?" in reference to returning to the UK. Please post your comments and debate sensibly. You may be someone out here (like Quoll) that cant get back, please post what you would be looking fwd to. Even myself as a new Australian, would look fwd to things as well so I will post later. Some of us like UK, some of us like Oz, some of us even have the audacity to like both! That is why I can't understand the need to make a post about what you won't miss about a country you have no intention of returning to ? Perhaps the posts are helpful, even if only to show that the majority of those who love Oz, don't particularly hate the UK and do indeed miss certain things. That's probably a bit hard to grasp for some PIO members who seem to think that all of the "sun and surf gang" have a downer on the UK.................mind you...............some folk will always believe what they want to believe, despite contradictory evidence. I miss........... Decent Pork Pies The changing of the seasons crocus and daffodil time The Lake District Yorkshire Moors The Highlands of Scotland Snowdonia curry sauce from my local chippy decent curry (easily available) The smell the morning after bonfire night The smell of donkey shlt on the beach at blackpool or a nice steamin' farm midden (truly!) LOL Opening windows and doors without worrying about heat getting in, AC escaping, flies and mozzies coming in Opening my curtains and not having to keep blinds closed in the daytime to keep room cool Also must add, there are things I miss too! My wife absolutely hates this weather, it wouldn't be so bad if the nights just cooled down a bit. I'm on a hill. I have all blinds open, windows and doors open, and there's nearly always a breeze. No swimming pool for us but apart from that we do the same, all windows and doors open to allow the beautiful breeze through the house all day and night.
