Hi everyone

Long time follower, first time poster. Well when I say long time, I mean just over a month or so really, just while my Visa was being approved. Now all is sorted out, I can't wait for the move. Lots to organize, in terms of all my possessions, house etc in England but I think it's only overwhelming if I think of it all at the same time. When I break it down, tackling each item on its own doesn't seem like that big a task.

I have all the same questions as everyone else: where's the best place to live? What's the lifestyle like? etc. Never been to Australia so moving country and job and leaving everything I've ever known behind in Blighty seems like a lot to take in, but last year I spent over t months traveling and I've just got a taste for being away. Of course, that's totally different to relocating and would be interested to hear how other people are finding it. Other than that, I thought I'd just say "hi"!

Hi and welcome to PIO, nice to see you here posting.

Congratulations on the visa, that is the hardest hurdle, everything else will be plane sailing.

It is hard to say where the best place is to live as everyone has their own ideas of utopia. What I will say is that there are plenty of gorgeous suburbs and you will definitely find your dream one. What you need to this is do you want a family friendly suburb away from the city or do you want to be in the middle of the action.

The lifestyle is great, and we have never looked back.

Kate

Hi Debbie

We're unsure about areas just yet - we've got 2 weeks 'holiday' accommodation booked in the CBD when we arrive and then who knows...! We'd like to have an easy-ish commute to the CBD (hoping we might have jobs there), and close to some cafes/restaurants but other than that no real idea. We'll need to find somewhere pretty quick in that two weeks...

Have you been out there on a reccie? I went 10 years ago so no doubt all has changed since then...my OH has never been! He's willing to give it a go :)

Yes lets keep in touch!

My husband and I are a young couple looking to move to Victoria in November. I am a hairdresser and my husband is a cabinet maker. If anyone know of any potential jobs that may be available could they let us know? I don't think i will have any probs finding work as there are so many salons, but for my husband it is a little more specialised....

Good chance that the family may be coming across to Melbourne in the coming months as I've been offered a transfer with my work for 2-years. Looked into a few of the threads on the western suburbs as I'd be working in williamstown and it seems that Point Cook may be a good option for renting but also for integrating into Australian life which would be vital as the OH is undecided whether to work or be a full-time mum. In terms of work the OH is currently a manager of a childrens nursery. Any feedback on (a) if she could get some p/t work in a local nursery (b) availability of child places in local nurseries would be appreciated.

Anyone shed some light on commuting time between Point Cook and Williamstown using public transport.

Thanks

The Hippo

I will be working at Sandringham Emergency so we will be living somewhere in bayside. Will have to wait until we get there for rental as they will not rent out properties unless seen first.

We lived there for 2009/10 for a year so we pretty know whereabouts we would like to live, but unless exchange improves we would never be able to live there.

Where will you be going Scottish Shell?

Seems to be lots of nurses making the move, has it always been that way? When we make the move we will have to live a short commute to a hospital as O/H does not drive. There seems to be lots of hospitals in the Melbourne area so we may still have some sort of a choice.

Hi all,

We will also be moving to Melbourne this year, hopefully in April-May. I found a job in Croydon and would want to live as close as possible to my work as I hate commuting to work. I think we waste so much time of our lives in our cars, where that time could rather be spend with family or even in the gym.

We are still waiting for our visa, as soon as we get it we are off !! But first a little holiday in South Africa while the container is shipped, with the hope of our belongings being there when we get there...

Hi all.

I'm new to these threads.

I'm Jamie (32) and my wife (Barbara, 30) is a midwife here in the UK and we're using an agency to get her a job in Melbourne. She had an interview with Southern Health and she has now had a job offer, so we're over the moon with it. They want her to start in October, but that's been extended to December if anything is delayed.

She's just in the process of getting the bits together to put the registration in.

We have extended family living in Point Cook, so they've offered to put us up for a bit until we find somewhere, which is great as we have 2 young kids (1 and half and 3 and half).

I'm an accountant at the moment in the UK, but really want to change my career if possible when I get over to Oz. Does anybody know if that's a possibility at all? I'm looking for a complete change and would love to do something outdoors... maybe working with animals/police officer/paramedic or even something in gardeneing or building...

Anyway, lots of info on these threads, really good to hear how people have done it and have not looked back.

We haven't been to Oz yet as not in a position to be able to afford to go before moving (it's move or nothing really...). But I've done a lot of research on the web my mother in law married an Oz guy from Perth, who tells all the time that it's a better way of life etc...

Jamie.

Hi, We're Tania (nurse), David(painter & decorator), and family.....girls aged 4,6,16 & 19....plus 23 yr old son to follow on own visa.

We're waiting for our 176 visa, sponsored by Vic, heading for Geelong. Medicals in 2 weeks, police checks sent for already. Hoping for August-December 2011, all being well with visa.

We cannot wait to leave the UK, will miss our friends greatly, but cannot wait to look ahead to all that we hope to have and achieve.

I love some other peoples posts on here, about looking forward and not looking back to what you had in the UK.....if you keep comparing Oz to UK, you will not settle, surely there must be a reason people are leaving the UK, to hope for a better life, but having lived in Queensland before, don't be disilusioned that everything in Oz is better, or you will be heading for disappointment.

We wish you all the very best of luck and hope that all your dreams are fulfilled and that you grow into your new lives.

Hi all,

We fly out to Melbourne on 21st June myself, husband and 2 kids, 16yrs and 6yrs. Our son 19 yrs is staying in the UK he's in the royal navy and too busy touring the world but hopefully he may change his mind at some point. I'm a district nurse here in Glasgow and have been lucky enough to secure a position with the RDNS in berwick so we will be moving there. Husband Garry will be working with Woods accident repair group he's a panel beater . Movers coming 4th and 5th april to move all our household goods. Everything is progressing as planned but main problem for me will be getting registered before we leave there seems to be a long delay in processing overseas applications. I don't think I'll feel as if we're really going until we go to the airport! We both haven't been to Oz before and all my family think I 'm brave but I think I'ts more that like the previous post said we too have become disillusioned with things in the UK they're so bleak especially for health and education

There are a lot of nurses on here - great news I am sure for Oz.

I had noticed on the thread that tracks VIC state sponsorship that the nurses usually get a positive yes to sponsorship pretty quickly compared to other occupations.

I have now started to try and sort out what we need to do before we move - it is starting to feel a bit more real now.

Hi Cornish78

Thanks for the warm welcome. Yes, luckily I applied for, was offered then accepted a job with a company that sponsored my 457 Visa. This is the first time that working in, ahem <cough, mumble> IT has had its advantages.

I think initially, while I settle in and find my feet, I'd be looking to live in one of the inner city areas. Don't think that my ideal place exists (anywhere in the world!). I'm in my mid thirties, and single again, and would love to live in a nice quiet area but have a cool vibrant social neighborhood nearby to go out in.

If you are looking for a social neighbourhood, maybe in a share house or something, check out St. Kilda, pretty good city location, right on the beach, cafes etc, inner city property is expensive though. Prahran is also a great place at night, plenty of shops/cafe/cinemas, trams to the city centre etc. Renting yourself can be expensive, but good luck with it.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello!

I'm moving to Melbourne July 2011!

My OH is originally from there, so we are going to stay with his parents in Clayton when we first arrive and then once we've looked for jobs we can start looking for somewhere to live!

We've had a look at a few areas, Bentleigh East is a favorite at the moment.

We don't have children yet so its just the two of us which I think will make the move much easier.... I'm starting to get a little panicky tho! :-/

I'm a Beauty Therapist and he works in IT.

We applied for a Defacto Partner Visa in November and we are still waiting for it........... thats the biggest issue at the momemt.....we hate waiting!!

Hope to keep in touch!

Thanks

Amy

I've been here for about 5 days now and I think I'm gonna like it here. Finding a place is obviously the big priority. For every place I see, I always think "will there be something better that becomes available in the next few days?". Properties seem to come on and off the market pretty quickly, sometimes even before the open viewings are available!! I'm loving the attitude of balancing work and private life and even if it wasn't, I don't think I'd be complaining about going into work. For the first time in a long time, I actually wake up looking forward to go to work. Might just be the honeymoon period, but I'm optimistic that it isn't.

If anyone fancies meeting up at some point, I'd be happy to hear how things are with you and just really make some new friends

Manny
