Guest Nickynoonoo Posted January 17, 2011 Hello everyone! Its been a while since I have posted as we had put our migration plans on hold due to a few family reasons. We are now ready to go but we now have a dilemma in that we can't decide where we to go! Our chosen destination are Perth and New Zealand (not sure what city). We have best friends in Perth so know that the help and assistance is there, our friend also works as a manager in a recruitment company so has contacts to help hubby who is an IT Professional. We will have a friends network quickly here. But will my husband cope with the summer heat, spiders (arrgghh!). Will it give us the active, family orientated lifestyle we crave. Our friends live in Secret Harbour so should we stay close by to them. We don't know anyone in New Zealand. Will we be disappointed with the weather as someone said it is like England! Will it give us more of the outdoor lifestyle we want with the wonderful countryside, beaches etc. They are both wonderful places which is why we don't know how to begin to decide which is best for us! We obviously can't visit both places to make a decision so need to do it on research and by talking to people like you who are living the dream (or about too!) Did anyone else face the same dilemma? If so, what made your decision? If you could spare a minute to give me your view I would be so very appreciative as we want to move forward but seem to be stuck! In eager anticipation :arghh: Nicky x
Guest aytch Posted January 18, 2011 Hi, It's purely a personal thing but I'd go to OZ, more opportunities and you already have an albeit very basic network there. You know where you'd like to be in Oz but not sure which city in NZ, wow thats a big pace to not know where you'd like to be in it lol. I'm not basing this on any personal experience just the way i'd go if I had the choice. Good Luck xx
Guest JK2510 Posted January 18, 2011 I would choose oz. We are going to Perth. My OH doesn't do spiders but he isn't worried at all! I think there are too many things to worry about the the mo! My mum has lived in oz for almost 20 years and my nan for over 35 yrs and they have rarely cone across spiders. I think it's about getting into a routine of checking in the garden especially after items have been stored for the winter.
Guest Nickynoonoo Posted January 18, 2011 I am more decided today thanks to more reading and thinking and then more thinking plus a bit more thinking! Oz is the way I want to go and Perth to be exact. We are so lucky to have best friends there with great connections. Just got to hope hubby decides Perth too and also try and get over the fact I will have to re-home my four animals who mean the world to me! The thought just makes me want to cry! Thanks to you both for taking the time to reply! Nicky x

Perth is beautiful ou will enjoy it NZ - well its full of Kiwis ( joke ) stick to perth !
Guest Nickynoonoo Posted January 18, 2011 Will you be rehoming all your animals Helen? My dogs are one and ten, big and small, my cats are ten and fourteen, one has diabetes and the other has a heart murmur which may cause rehoming issues. It will play on my mind. It will be my mission to find them the best homes when the time comes.
zippyderby 150 Posted January 18, 2011 We spent £7k on a reccie to NZ 2 1/2 yrs ago........we are now in Australia Living on the Gold Coast since 2010
Guest aytch Posted January 18, 2011 If we ever take the plunge then yes we will have to because we simply won't be able to afford to take them with us, they're very large so roughy £3500 each, one of our dogs has collitis and epilepsy and the cat is 16, so not easy rehomers, the tortoise is 63! It'll break my heart but this isn't the time for emotions to get in the way, I may sound harsh but if you really want to make the move you have to be hard faced. I just read that back to myself and it sounds horrible, but i guess you have to make sacrifices. i know ppl who have had to leave children behind which must be much much worse. regards Helen
Guest Nickynoonoo Posted January 18, 2011 I agree Helen, I keep putting it to the back of my mind as getting the visa is what needs to come first now.
Guest Nickynoonoo Posted January 18, 2011 To add to that Helen, if you could take one animal would you? Or would you not think it was fair and rehome them all. My young small dog we could take but feel bad for the others and wonder if we should just start a fresh in Perth no animals so no restrictions in rentals etc. Like we, long way off yet. Guest aytch Posted January 18, 2011 I couldn't split my dogs cos they're brother and sister and only 2 yrs old, they're weimeranas so very dependant dogs anyway and need lots of attention. If we could afford it and I didn't think the quarantine would do the mental damage it would to them i'd take them both without a doubt. However having said that, new country new start, if you're planning on renting then you'll more leeway without a dog in tow. I really don't know hun, it upsets me just to think of it! Soppy sod! x

Guest outnumbered Posted January 18, 2011 Sorry to jump in but if your animals came from a rescue centre, they are obligated to take them back in again if you can no longer care for them. I've recently rehomed our dog but was struggling to find a home for our cat. After phoning around the animal rescue centres in our area we found this information out and when we phoned the centre we got our cat from, they still had our records and confirmed that they would have to take her back again (we adopted her over 7 years ago). As it turns out, my mum has now kindly offered to have her, which was a huge relief for me. It is heartbreaking having to rehome much loved pets though:sad:
Guest Nickynoonoo Posted January 18, 2011 I think I will be happy if they went to people we know or the dogs go together. One of my cats is old with diabetes so I worry no one will want him due to the expense. When the time comes I will do my best to find them lovely homes and settle them in. Thanks for sharing your experience with me. X
