We are moving to Oz in April 2011 - I will be working as a midwife at Dandenong Hospital and are trying to decide where to live? I will be working shifts so don't want to live more than 20-30 mins drive from the hospital. We have two children ages 5 and 11 so want to make sure we get a rental somewhere where, if we decide to stay, we can buy so that we don't have to uproot our kids again - my daughter is in Primary 7 and would go up to secondary school while we're in Australia so want to make sure she does that with friends she's already made in primary 7. We can't decide if the coast option is best or if the country is better. The seaside appeals, but it would appear the house prices and rentals are lesser the more inland you go, and maybe you get more for your money? We are an active family who enjoy running, orienteering, golfing, hiking, biking, most sports! and my daughter adores horses - so these facilities need to be close by, escecially horses!!! We have looked at Berwick and Cranbourne etc - but Mordialloc, Aspendale etc appeals too! Any advice much appreciated! Jordanl Posted January 9, 2011 Share Posted January 9, 2011 Hi We moved to Berwick last April and love it here. The commute to Dandenong is ok but can be slow during rush hour. There are many, many poms here and quite a few of us get together to socialise wether its biking, playing football or partying! There are lots of families here with children of similar ages to yours. My son moves up to secondary this year and my daughter is at a local primary school. We love Berwick and feel we have chosen a fantastic area to live in. olly Posted January 10, 2011 Share Posted January 10, 2011 Any of those areas you mentiond are fine, the actual suburb of Dandenong is not the best place to live though. But Berwick or any of the south eastern suburbs or those along the Monash Freeway/Princes Hwy will get you to Dandenong. I live in the eastern suburbs (near Ringwood) and drove down to Dandenong yesterday on Eastlink - 30 mins. You could even try Rowville or Wantirna South, Keysborough etc along the eastlink out here. By the way, there is a great school for girls in Mentone (Mentone Girls Secondary College) just for your info, as if you are thinking about the Nepean Hwy suburbs you mentioned, Mentone I can recommend, and it's right on the beach. Petals Posted January 10, 2011 Share Posted January 10, 2011 I worked in Dandenong for 13 years in the actual centre Robinson Street and I live on the Mornington Peninsula in Somerville, used to take me 40 minutes to get to work. Three different routes, Westernport Highway, through Frankston along Frankston Dandenong Road, or now through Frankston and along Eastlink. Only mentioning it because I live in horsey country. We have horsey people across the road, equestrian centres, breeders all around here. Also we have a great bike path which goes all the way from Somerville to Somers and is well used. Guest The Pom Queen Posted January 10, 2011 Share Posted January 10, 2011 Although as already pointed out Dandenong is a terrible place to live, you have some great suburbs within easy commute. Have a look at Lynbrook (excellent family friendly area, lake, BBQ, park and an excellent primary school), Lyndhurst (another family suburb, close to rail, highway to CBD), Berwick is lovely, Cranbourne there are some nice areas. Sue Hi there - thanks for your quick reply - what secondary school will your son be moving up to and what primary do your kids go to just now? I've looked at Berwick Primary and also Berwick Secondary for my daughter but it is zoned and rentals appear difficult to get in the right area. We keep coming back to Berwick, when making decisions about where to live - it certainly seems to tick all our boxes! Hey there -Thanks for your quick reply re Somerville- all the horsey stuff sounds perfect but it's a bit too far out for us I think. Sounds lovely otherwise! So difficult getting this right :arghh:!! Herbies Posted January 10, 2011 Share Posted January 10, 2011 Hi there, we live on the Hunt Club in Cranbourne East, I work in Dandenong and it takes approx 15- 20 mins, i know of a couple others in the the Cranbourne area who commute also to the Dandy hospital and the journey is quite manageable. Primary schools in tese suburbs all seem to be pretty good, you really need to concentrate on the senior school, as decent ones are few and far between. I have rently taken my twin girls aged 10 out of Lynbrook to attend our new school at the Hunt club which is opening in Feb, there is to be a primary and secondary on the one site but as its new, no reputation yet although the outlook and facilities are fantastic. Debs :biggrin: Debs Berwick Secondary is an excellent school but as you say it is strictly zoned, so much so that they ask for a copy of your tenancy agreement before accepting you. For the OP (Original Poster) Dandenong is a very central location to good outter suburb areas. Seaside or bushclad will be a personal choice once you arrive and drive around. It would not take too long to drive in an area and go okay this is for us. Check Real Estate, Property, Land and Homes for Sale, lease and rent - realestate.com.au for prices and rentals Also this site is useful to get understanding of travel times Route planner - Victoria, Australia I would suggest: Mordiallic and Frankston South for beach Upper Beaconsfield for countryside or consider inner melbourne where you would be going against the traffic. ie Glen Waverley, Oakleigh ......(such a big choice for you). Guest ashmalog Posted January 11, 2011 Share Posted January 11, 2011 i live in berwick and work in dandenong and it takes me approx 30 mins in the morning, traffic can build up on the return home but you will be doing shifts not the 9-5 like everyone else i presume. there are some lovely areas to look at living but it is best to see them, have a drive through them once you arrive. we always kept coming back to berwick when we were trying to make a decision, we just went with our gut instinct and do not regret it. i have 3 boys that go to berwick chase primary and alkira secondary college and they have had a good year. good luck. btw berwick is only 25-40 mins from the beach!! I am currently living (rented) in Cranbourne North and through a friend I too heard about HuntClub. I visited the area and it looked appealing and homely. They have a school and day care just around the area which I hear is exclusive to only HuntClub residents. We have booked a plot which is due to open in May. I am wondering if you or anyone else in this forum have any reviews to share with us before we invest in this property? We have heard that HuntClub doesn't have much of an appreciating value? Is it true? In my opinion regarding the plot we booked, I think the place is nice, with parks and bbq/recreation areas, schools and day cares 5/10 mins walk away. Shopping center proposal is approved and due to come up. I dont know about the train station. But on the whole, I think its ideal. But this doubt nags me regarding the appreciating value of land/house. We bought here in 2009 an existing house that was approx 3 years old. The value of ours has risen with the average house market value. Our main reason for choosing here was the school and the proposed plans with the shops and medical centre. We love our street and the atmosphere around the community based estate. I know of others who have bought plots on the new developed parts near the soon to be through road linsell boulevard. The schools are zoned now and mine are starting secondary next year.
