Suitable Jobs for UK Police Officers

Hi Everybody

I have just signed up to this forum so apologies if I have made any mistakes.

My partner and I have thought long and hard about a move to Australia ( Melboune in particular - as I have family their) and in the last day or so finally decided to start the Immigration process ( one the New Year is long gone!!).

I was wondering if there is anybody who could offer me some advice as to what job opportinities are out there in Australia for people like me who are interested in moving to oz having served in the Police in the UK.

I have 16 years Police experience to bring with me ( and at this time are still in the Police), but apart from that I am lacking in the qualifications/skills dept ( I have construction qualifications- but last time i touched a building site was 16 years ago, and I am not to keen to return to that if i can help it!).

My partner is a Counsellor/occupational therapist and it is this that will hopefully get us through our skills assessment.

I understand fully I can't walk into a job but would be willing to do any type of work (preferably using my skills I have gained in the Police!)

Like I say I wonder if anybody is out their who could point me in the right direction?

At various times states have advertised and done recruitment drives for the police force (I know WA have done them). It may be worth contacting the states your interested in asking if they are offering sponsorship and sending them a copy of your CV.

Good luck

Hi Guys

Firstly Happy New Year to you all!!!

I have made initially enquiries with various Police Forces and at the moment it appears none are offering the sponsorship route into Australia. Therefore, I would ( and willing) have to wait until I am over their 'till I can apply to join.

Due to this my train of thought was once in oz attempting to gain a similar job using my skills that I have gained in the Police over in the uk and once settled in then applying to join the Police over in Oz.

My only problem is, what Jobs are available to someone like me with my experience who at this time is unable to join the Police in oz???

Can anybody help??

Happy New Year to you too!

Maybe a customs officer or airport security? Or Federal Police rather than state police? Private security firms might be another option or working for a big company in some sort of security role. Youth work, perhaps? :policeman:

The new State government in Victoria has promised new police, so you could check it out if you want to stay in the force

Victoria Police - Careers

and also they are hiring more protective service officers apparently.

You could also think about being a worksafe investigator in the workplace, they recruit in April in Victoria, here is their website, I know they do take police too.

www.worksafe.vic.gov.au

cheers, hope this helps !

One thing I would say Pottster, is if you were thinking of joining the police service here, one thing I would mention is that you are asked if you are happy to go anywhere, this might mean a one horse town somewhere in a rural region, this is something to consider. I say this because I was once partnered to a uk officer and this was a major consideration in him coming out here (I was worried about it) as he was used to the hustle and bustle of London. Just so you know ! regards Olly

Hi

I noticed a TV advert for recruiting police officers on tv today (I live in Western Australia). Maybe worth enquiring about this/sponsorship. I did notice they mentioned a website but didn't take note of it, will next time. Thought I'd let you know but may be no help if you are wanting to move to Melbourne.

good luck

When i was in Perth i looked at a job at the Burswood hotel security, manning the doors at the casino and i liked the look of it, the pay wasn't bad either $43,000 in january 2006 and it was 2 x 12 hour day shifts followed by 2 x 12 hour night shifts and then 4 days off, i t seemed great to me and i think they would snap a uk police officer up, best of luck.

Hi,

Just wondering if you had any luck with your move to Australia. My husband and I are currently looking to emigrate to Oz too. He is a police officer (detective) with over 16 years experience and was initially trying to recruit internationally but is now thinking along the lines of investigator/detective for a private company as police forces in Oz aren't recruiting at the moment (we think). After 16 years in the police in UK it doesn't leave much in the way of qualifications or experience in any other job so we seem a bit stuck as to where to turn now. We are both 40 so time isn't on our side for much longer. Any help or advice would be appreciated. PS. We are relying on my husband being the main applicant as I am a an ex-police staff worker and now a registered Childminder which isn't on the skills list. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Is police officer on the skills list?

If it is, he could look at becoming a prison officer, they are always wanting new recruits.

May I refer you to this thread- hopefully some useful info for you regarding police etc http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/western-australia/162978-british-police-officer-needs-help.html

Thanks for that thread - interesting reading and food for thought. Fingers crossed for an international police recruitment anywhere in Australia! Not fussy where we go too much, just know we want to be there and not in the UK!!

Don't blame you. Did you not see the Western Australia recruitment from the UK they've just held? The alternative would be to move over on a PR Visa (if you can) and apply whilst you're here. That's what I did as the direct recruitment didn't look like it was happening anytime soon.

Yes we have considered a PR visa first then coming over and applying to a Police Force. We are just concerned as my husband has over 10 years service now and is a Detective Constable and we think it's possible he didn't get through the paper sift this year with Western Australia Police for this reason. We are in limbo at the moment and on a time limit as he is 41 in December so time is ticking, will have to make a decision to hold out for another international recruitment drive or go for a PR visa and take a chance.
