Seems fine. Although I have seen no need to register with centrelink, not sure why people do that, perhaps someone will enlighten me.

If you have kids all payments come from centrelink.

Not sure why, when I arrived (spouse visa) I was advised by the paperwork that comes with visa grant to register with Centerlink. i did register and when I asked why the girl said it was in case i needed to make a claim. But I am not allowed to claim anything for 2 years anyway?

If you have children then i can see the point. but people like me, it just seemed a paper exercise.

Most Australians without kids would never register at centrelink unless they wanted unemployment benefits or something like that - does seem odd.

Well, one thing to "do" that you need to add to your list is actually a "not do" item. When you arrive, and after you have rushed around to get the 'to do' things sorted, would you please just sit back and do nothing for a while? Take a few deep breaths, look around, relax - the hard part has been done. Breathe in the new air, take time to find your feet, and then get busy in creating a new life.

You have everything covered and when we arrived we did Medicare, banks, driving licence in one day and TFN by internet - sorted and all totally in a relaxed mode.

And Yes do exactly as docboat suggested after your run arounds, sit back have a beer and take stock of your new life about to start in this beautiful country.......... Good Luck

There are some very clever poeple on his forum, thats for sure.

The most important thing to do is catch your breath, take a couple of days to acclimatize & get over the jet lag & have a few cold beers or wines.

Its taken you a long time to get this far, the next phase can wait just a day or two.

(BTW your list looks pretty good to me as well)

Hi

internet/phone should be first priority as it took us 2 weeks, also a car. Without transport and phone/internet you'll find it a lot harder. Medicare number and then bank account then tfn, don't worry about centrelink at this stage as you're supposed to be self sufficient in the first 2 years. In the first few days you'll be so jet lagged and confused that if you achieve any of the above, well done

Centrelink administers family tax benefit and childcare benefit so it's essential that you register asp if you have kids. Both those benefits are available to new PR's and do not require a two year wait.

we do have a little baby boy and were coming over on a PR visa so thats why i stated centerlink

thanks

Have you sorted an australian child seat - uk seat is not accepted? There are various places you can get help fitting it if you are unsure how to do it. I guess this might be a number one priority if you haven't sorted it already from the uk.

Good point mate, never thought of that! Is there something in particular that I'll have to look in to when buying an OZ car set?

I am assuming all OZ shops will sell OZ standard car seats.....right?

Are you are a permanent resident? What reason did they give? Are you sure it wasn't because you weren't eligible for a different reason rather than being new residents?

Family Tax Benefit A eligibility: Family Tax Benefit Part A - eligibility

Family Tax Benefit B eligibility: Family Tax Benefit Part B - eligibility

As you can see here there is no 2 year wait for permanent residents:

Family Tax Benefit A residency requirements: http://www.centrelink.gov.au/internet/internet.nsf/payments/ftb_a_residence.htm

Family Tax Benefit B residency requirements: http://www.centrelink.gov.au/internet/internet.nsf/payments/ftb_b_residence.htm

Oops, missed this b1k3r sorry. Yes they will. I would make sure you don't buy too big a seat for the width of your car, ensure it is certified to Australian standards and fitted correctly. Some can be used as toddler seats as well. Some can have a capsule removed and clicked into a stroller etc. See The Bub Hub: Pregnancy Baby Parenting Website for discussions...

Thanks for your reply, we are PR 176 visa holders. We filled in all the paperwork online, gave them all the details for our children, they took a copy of passport and kids birth certificates and they said we didnt meet the australian residency requirements? we appealled and explained that we are PR visa holders etc but just got back another bog standard automated letter saying that we dont meet australian residency. Quite puzzled by it, lol.

They're wrong. I suggest that you visit centrelink in person...............and don't forget that you want backpaying. From centrelink's "newly arrived in Australia" page.

In general, social security payments from Centrelink are only available to people who reside in Australia and are either Australian citizens or holders of permanent visas. In addition, most social security payments and concession cards, except Family Tax Benefit and Child Care Benefit, have a two year newly arrived resident's waiting period.

Good luck

Somewhere to live is essential. Then try to get an Australian driving licence - it will make some of the other steps much easier. You can get a bank account sorted out in advance with NAB (and perhaps others) and you can do the Tax File Number online.

I agree. If you were living in Australia as PR then I can't see what grounds they were using. Phone them or go in person. Good luck.
