mj&db Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 Booking the dogs flights tomorrow. They will be flying on Weds 16th Feb and arriving Fri 18th Feb. I am arranging all the paperwork, blood tests and parasite treatments myself as a lot cheaper but am worried I might get the timing wrong! Does the wording "within X amount of days prior to export" mean that I can't do it anytime before X amount of days but I could do it anytime after? So for example: Blood tests and first round of external parasite treatments to be done within 30days prior to export. - I was planning on doing this day 27 prior to export, giving me three days to play with incase there was any delays with the flights (which is quite likely with the extreme weather we have been experiencing the last few winters!!). Final external and internal parasite treatments, and completion of Vet Cert Part A to be done within 4days prior to export. - I was planning on doing this day 2 prior to export. Any advice would be much appreciated.

We are planning on moving in July and need to know how soon we need to look as vaccinations, bloods etc. Rang the vet today but htey just said look online and Australia is one of the hardest countries to take pets to with all the strict procedures. Any advice would be appreciated.
mj&db Posted December 31, 2010 Author Posted December 31, 2010 Hey, I have worked it out now and I was reading it right! Your vets sound as useless as mine...I think I was told the same thing! The AQIS website is very good though...if you go to the importing cats and dogs to Australia section there is a pack you can download that gives you step by step instructions on what needs doing. Realistically you can't really do too much until 6mths before you plan to leave, the majority of stuff is done in the last 30days! Most companies will do everything for you but at a cost....it is much much much cheaper to do as much as you can yourself and is a lot more straightforward than you may think. Everything highlighted in blue I have organised myself. Here is the process in a nutshell. Microchip (no idea on price as our dogs were chipped when puppies) - must be done before you even start the process as you need to detail the chip number on everything! Apply for AQIS Import Permit (£310 total for both dogs) - These are only valid for 6months from date of issue so I wouldn't apply until you are 100% leaving in 6months. They come through pretty quickly, we applied for ours last month and got them through in a matter of days. Apply for DEFRA Export Permit (free) Book tentative quarantine accommodation (£1500 total for both dogs) - Upon receipt of your Import Permits. This won't be confirmed until you have booked the animals flights and have all the details. - paid in Australia, never included in any quotes from export firms. Flights (£2372 total for both dogs - standard size staffies) - Do this via a firm (cheapest we found are Airsupply Shipping). This price includes all airline fees, the crates, sealing of crates and final paperwork and vet checks that need to be done on the day of departure. VETS (total for everything done by the vets will be around £500 total for both dogs) Between 1yr and 14days prior to export Vaccinations - these are all included in your standard booster (apart from Kennel Cough I think). - distemper - infectious hepatitis - canine parvovirus - para-influenza - bordetella bronchiseptica (kennel cough) One thing to note is the standard booster jab normally also includes leptospira - this needs to be removed as it will interfere with the blood tests. Within 30days prior to export - Scan Microchip - Blood Tests (ehrlichiosis, brucellosis, leishmaniosis, leptospirosis) - External Parasite Treatments - Vets also start completing DEFRA Export Certificate and AQIS Import Certificate Part A. Within 4days prior to export - External Parasite Treatments (again) - Internal Parasite Treatments - Vets complete DEFRA Export Cert and AQIS Import Cert Part A. Day of Departure (all included in flight price above) This is stuff that the flight company will sort as part of the basic package. - Scan of microchip - Complete AQIS Import Cert Part B - Seal container Hope this helps.

I've done the way you described it ;-) Be really carefull on the laboratory results: have the blood sample date and everything required on the list!! PS: my dog has been relased a few days ago and everything is fine! All the best Cheers

Guest Sparticus Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Hey, Apply for DEFRA Export Permit (free) . Hi sorry to but in here, We are moving to oz with our shih-tzu dog. we have the Aqis permit but havent heard about this DEFRA export permit  Oh dear! we are moving end of next month! can anyone please tell me what this is and where i get it from?? I thought it was all going too smoothly ! Thank you
mj&db Posted January 7, 2011 Author Posted January 7, 2011 I did the same as you! Only just found out about this one. I was so absorbed in the AQIS import requirements I didn't even think about the UK export requirements. The UK the DEFRA Export Health Certificate is actually enough and you don't need to complete the AQIS Vet Certificates. AQIS explained that the DEFRA Export Health Certificate was developed in consultation with them (it is almost identical) so provides the same certification as their AQIS Vet Certificates. You need to apply for DEFRA Export Health Certificate. It is free...call this number and they will send one direct to your vets to complete. CatandDogExports.Carlisle@animalhealth.gsi.gov.uk / 01228 403600 Hope this helps. Good luck.

Guest Sparticus Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 Thanks for reply. I called aqis last night and found out as i live in greece I dont need a DEFRA permit, its just a Uk thing. Our dog is flying on 21st feb so soon will be panicking about all the vaccinations what to do 30 days before, 14 days before, 4 days before, 1 minute before lol! God, its difficult!! Good luck with everything
mj&db Posted January 7, 2011 Author Posted January 7, 2011 Another expert , i`ll put my mortgage on your dog failing bloodtests lepto (its in the annual vaccine in the uk , retests are 2 to 3 weeks you are leaving it fine ,and youll get rooted about ,went with petair no hassle and not much dearer Import requirements mean you can't do them any earlier than 30days so I don't really see how we have any other choice than to cut it fine?!?! They didn't have lepto in their last round of vaccines as we knew we were planning to immigrate. My vet advised that lab results for immigration tests are generally back in less than a week, as the labs know we only have a 30day window to test and re-test if they do fail. Both the pet relocation and vet said to not get the bloods done right on the 30day mark in case the flights are delayed (we all remember the snow last Feb!) Not pretending to be the expert. Just sharing information that I have been told by the experts...
BobPetairUK Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Hey Give us a call or email me and i will send you over some of our vet guidance notes. Basically they take the DEFRA notes and make them a bit simpler so the vets (and you) can understand them and make a timeline. Does your pet shipper not help with this kind of thing? bob
mj&db Posted January 15, 2011 Author Posted January 15, 2011 HI Bob, Thanks for your offer. My pet shipper did send through guidelines and I have also read the AQIS guidance....it was just the word "within" that was confusing me! I think I had read the guidance soooooo much that my brain was a bit frazzled! All makes sense now!
