I think under $1000 is duty free - can't remember if shipping is included in the $1000. Some issues are obviously plug + keyboard will be uk style and australia uses us keyboard layout. You will need international warranty. I found this very frustrating using us layout at work and uk at home but may not bother you. Where did you look for your pc in oz btw? We may be able to help find cheaper.
Guest Guest31881 Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 PC's in Australia are very cheap at the moment, if you are looking at the advertised price you will find that no one pays that, you haggle it down to a suitable price. Bringing one over here you are allowed $1000 in value before you pay tax, check that the warranty will be honored over here. But double check the prices, you could be surprised how cheap they are here.
Guest Chrisheona Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Thanks for the replies - I've looked at Harvey Norman and a few other websites - are there any you can recommend? With haggling I suppose shops are best to visit - any recommendations for Melbourne? If I can get a not too bad PC for about $800ish then it would make it not worth the paperwork. Thanks for the keyboard advice - I might bring one over with me if I do buy one in Oz.
Guest Guest31881 Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Hi, I purchased a new computer (HP quad processor, with 4gb ram) about 4 months ago. together with a new monitor, mouse and head set. Total value was $1100, but after asking for their best price and haggling a little I got it for $800. prices have dropped since then and if I had waited I probably could have got a better deal. I got mine from Harvey Norman, but you have the 'Good Guys' who boast pay less for cash. and several others. Shop around its well worth it.

LukeM Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 They're right just go to your JB Hi-Fi and say "what's the best price you can do that for?" and you're bound to get something off it. New 16GB iPod Nano. I asked them... they knocked $15 off there on the spot. I've also managed to get good deals on guitars and stuff too. $800 instead of $1100 with free case and $10 off a strap?! Nice. We haggled the fridge, the vacuum, the TV, everything right down in Harvey Norman too.
Guest Chrisheona Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Thanks - plenty of options for me to look into - seems like buying in Oz isn't as bad as first looks - though sounds like I'm going to have to get used to haggling! Very helpful replies.

Very helpful replies. Also, because PC's & other electronic items get outdated very quickly nowadays, I have got into the habit of asking the the salesperson which one they want to sell the most  Bought a laptop for the missus recently and got $130 dollars off (over 20%) I find Harvey norman in general the dearest unless you are prepared to really haggle. (although I did get a coffee machine for Xmas from the original price of $2299 down to $1386 plus a couple of freebies included) JB Hi Fi & Retravision are my favourites. Also, haggle on pretty much everything over here. Furniture is another one you can get some very good deals.
