Hi

Myself and my husband are moving from the UK to Sydney for a year and would like some advice on which area to live in.

He will be working in Homebush so we would like to be somewhere not too far from here (although we dont necessarily want to live in Homebush).

We have been looking at (and I like the look of) the inner west suburbs so far (Balmain, glebe, leichardt).

Think our front runner so far is five dock.

We are 27 and would like somewhere which is not completely dead, on the other hand we dont want to be out every night. We are really looking for:

somewhere safe

community feeling, cafes/pubs

$500 AUD a week absolute max

easy bus/train access as I dont know where I will be working yet

Any advice you can give would be appreciated, you can only get so much fromthe internet...

Cheers

Probably the thing worth considering is how you are going to be getting to Homebush. I live in Balmain and to get there on public transport would mean and bus/ferry into the CBD and a bus/train out again to Homebush.

Take a look in domain and realestate for options on housing, in Balmain/Rozelle you are unlikely to find anything other than a basic one bed for up to $500 a week.

Not sure what Five Dock is like for going out as it is one of the places I only ever drive through to get somewhere (generally to Bunnings which is the Aussie equivalent of B&Q  ). Balmain has lots of pubs & cafes and does Glebe, Leichhardt as the Italian quarter has lots of cafe's and restaurants and slightly less pubs. Newtown also may be worth considering as it has pubs and cafes plus is on the trainline to Homebush

Hi there

I have to say that Glebe is the best Inner west suburb that I know of. I live in the Eastern Subs but if I had to, I would do Glebe. Has a really nice chilled vibe about with great cafes, restaurants and bars. Each weekend they have a Glebe market and there are always things going on there. Balmain is stunning but it IS a trek to get to the CBD or any main train line if you need to without taking a bus. Newtown is also quite amusing but is a tad grungy and alternative. You can walk into newtown from Glebe and they have a great music concert hall there called the Enmore and there always seems to be gigs, plays and other cultural events going on. Steer well away from Pyrmont and the CBD areas as it seems great at first but everyone I know who has done the city, wants to leave as it feels less social and has less of a community feel. Homebush is actually very easy to commute to on a train so if you were to get a job in the CBD yourself, then you guys could easily consider the otherside such as Surry Hills as I live in this area and its 10 mins walk to Central Station. I would recommend going on Welcome to CityRail as this shows all the train and bus routes to Homebush so you could see where is easy to commute to.

Hope this helps and good luck with the move. Tis the best city ever and I have only been here 6 months and fallen in love with it already.

Kat
