Guest Guest 47403 Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 Hi all new to the forum I have posted this on another forum but didn't get much of a response so hopefully someone here will have a bit of advice for us. My partner is a registered mental health nurse with over 10 years experiance so we'll be applying for a visa with her as the main applicant. We're in the early stages of planning a move to hopefully the Brisbane area. She is interested in the opinions of nurses who have moved to Aus is regards to doing it independently or through employer sponsorship, we believe wages are lower when moving on a sponsorship but the whole process is much easier and quicker is that the case? We're also looking at the state sponsorship option to QLD. How long do employers usually contract you in for if they sponsor you? If your an experienced nurse and move over independently is work generally easy to find? Many thanks all many more questions to follow I'm sure.
Guest PaulandJulie Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 I am being sponsored by my employer and my wages are not lower than if i wasnt being sponsored, they are going to be the same. The process is also a lot quicker, hope this helps
Guest Guest 47403 Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 Thats good to know thanks how long are you contracted for? Did you get a job in your preferred location?
Guest PaulandJulie Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 I have a 457 which is for 2 years initially as the hospital expect me to apply for permanent residency before the 2 years is up, otherwise they will extend for 4 years in total. I had 5 jobs to choose from, so yes i did choose my location.
Guest Louey Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 I am travelling out with my OH who will be on a 457 visa for 4 years shes a nurse. I believe some employers on a 457 offer a relocation package which may include flights, shipping costs, migration agent fees and visa costs. Beware as relocation costs maybe have to be paid back if you leave the job early. The visa process has been easy and quick as the employer provided a migration agent, this meant we just gave whatever paperwork they asked us for. We are also provided with temporary accommodation when we arrive which is one less thing to worry about. I would definately consider the 457 route....my understanding is that you can change jobs and locations but must have another employer willing to take over your sponsorship. Best of luck with it all

Guest dawn42 Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 I got 457 sponsorship with a private hospital, but also applied for state sponsorship for WA as we were moving to Perth.Which was free on line application and very easy to apply for. Then applied for 176 skilled migration permanent residency off shore visa a month before we left for OZ. The reason for this was my OH was really worried I might be trapped in a job I didnt like etc. How right he was !!!!!! Two months after we arrived we got our pre grant visa. Which ment we had 6 months to leave OZ to activate visa. 4 months later we had a week in Bali and when we flew back to OZ we became automatically permanent residents. I then had the freedom to work where ever I wanted. I would strongly recommend you reaserch all your visa options. Its a massive move , and if you can secure independant permanent residency I would consider this. I know alot of people who are on 457 and promises made by employers may not always be met once you are here. I dont wont to sound like the grim reaper , and your wifes sponsor might be a great employer , but they might not as in my experiance. I have just stated my 3rd job in 12 months , it has been hard adjusting to nursing here.( been a nurse 25yrs in UK) But it has been worth all the stress, we have been here 13months, my 2 teenagers , OH and I love it in Perth and wish we had done it sooner. Good luck & all the best
Guest Guest 47403 Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Thanks Dawn I'm swaying towards a 176, where as OH likes the idea being sponsored so she has a job to go to, from looking generally it seems that there are plenty of advertised jobs have you found job hunting relatively easy?
Guest PaulandJulie Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 How did you job hunt? Did you go to any of the expos in the UK? Hi, we didnt go to the expo's. I applied for some jobs through the Seek jobsite (like our job centre website here) and also contacted a nursing agency who found me a job, then weighed up the options of where my family wanted to live and decided from there. Luckily I was given a couple of contacts (british girls who have relocated to the same hospital) and they have given me an insight as to how the hospital work and whether they will honor what they have offered me. I have been given help with the cost of my flight also, so it is worth asking the question what they will offer in regards relocation. Another hospital offered a better relocation package but i had heard it wasn't a nice place to work. Good luck Julie

Good luck Julie Thanks for the replies everyone it's really appreciated just a few more questions I'm afraid. Firstly when applying for jobs whilst still in the UK do you actively ask for sponsorship? Does my OH have to join AHPRA before applying for jobs? Is it worth involving an agent? What roughly is the time scale from getting a job offer to gaining a visa? Obviously everyone is different but just some rough ideas please? Can anyone recommend job agencies in the Brisbane area please? If anyone fancies writing out a sequence of events and time scales for your whole experience and sending it to me in a PM a lot to ask I know. Thank you all so much for your time. Baz
Guest Guest 47403 Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 Happy new year everyone just bringing this back up to the top.
