Applying for PR before completing studies

Is there anyone who has applied for PR before completing your 2 years of studies in Australia?

My husband will complete 2 years of Master degree end of June next year and we want to apply for PR as soon as he finish his study. As you know that immigration law is gonna be changed from next july of next year.

With old law we have enough point to apply for PR, so we want to do it, but the problem is that he can't get his graduation cetficiate by the end of June cause he will finish his study the end of June and it takes 1 week to get the certificate, which means it may not possible to apply for PR with old law just due to one week of gap.

If anyone who applied for PR before completing study, would you give us some advice? If it's possible, what other valid documents we can sumit??

Please help... if we don't apply for PR with old law, it's gonna be big hassle...Thanks!!!

Hi there,

You will need to submit either letter of completion or the award (actual certificate). There are no exceptions I am afraid.

Does your husband need qualifications assessment at all?

The reason why I am asking is because applicants are required to have their qualifications assessed by relevant assessing body before visa application could be made.

Thus, getting letter of completion on time, in itself might not be enough, since most assessments take at least couple of weeks (if you are prepared to pay for speedy assessment) to come through.

Thank you for your quick reply!!

You means that if we can get the letter of completion from University is it possible to apply for PR and it doesn't need to be actual certificate?

Also, my husband is preparing for assessment from EA, but still we don't have enough time to do it very well by himself, we need help from someone who is specialized in engineering stuff. Any recommendation..?

Thanks again!!

Yes, letter of completion and final academic transcript are enough for you to submit your visa application. I submitted my letter of completion + academic transcript and then supplied my award after the graduation ceremony. However, be warned, it takes at least 10 working days to get the letter of completion itself.

How does your husband plan to do his qualifications assessment without a letter of completion? As I already explained in my previous post, it takes time for one’s qualifications to be assessed.

you are applying for 885 visa, am i correct?

Currently my husband has a student visa, my visa is a dependant visa on him.

In cases where Australian studies are being relied upon, a letter of completion or some other evidence that all the course requirements have been satisfied is a time of application criterion. If a pre-migration skills assessment is being relied upon it must have been applied for in all cases and in most, but not all cases, it must have been finalised and must be positive.

To be safe, I suggest you run you case past a registered migration agent who has recent experience with Engineers Australia.

and we will be applying for 885 visa. My husband is studying master degree, he is getting the assessment for his previous studies of engineering.

To apply for an onshore 885 visa, you WILL need a positive skills assessment from an assessing body (eg. for nursing it is ANMC, for accountants it is CPA/CIMA, for IT it is ACS, for engineering it is Engineers Australia, etcetera). This is usually possible only after you have completed a course and have a transcript and/or course completion letter.

Each assessing body takes anywhere from 2 weeks to 12 weeks to provide you with a skills assessment. I suggest you check with the relevant assessing body and identify their requirements.

It seems that you have a very tight timeline and I absolutely understand your anxiety.

Wishing you all the very best with your application.

I don't want to go into the details here but i had my qualifications assessed before i completed my studies. So, in some instances (where assessment is based on the previous qualifications +current studies) it is possible to obtain qualifications assessment before completion of studies.

@ osita Understood. Just make sure that you have all required documentation before you apply for your visa.

We will be applying for 885 visa. My husband is currently studying master degree, he is getting the assessment for his previous studies of engineering(bachelor degree), not master studies. here goes same question, still do we need to get graduation certificate of Master degree in australia to apply for PR?

I think I answered your question already. All you need is your letter of completion + final academic transcript, that is all.
