Goochie Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 Mrs G and I have our hearts set on moving down under, but there are a few things we like to eat drink and do that we will probably miss. So, can those who are already there tell us if the following are available? Food and drink: Tetley Tea Bags Warburtons Crumpets Marsh mallows Green & Blacks chocolate Ginger bread (the man shaped biscuits, not the cake) We also love a bargain (especially when looking for furniture for our new place in Oz): Charity Shops Car boot sales Jumble sales Thanks.
wishfulthinking Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 Yes to all the above apart from warburtons crumpets, they do crumpets but not warbies. Also jumble sales, they tend to so a garage sale, which are similar to jumble sales, yes for charity shops and yes for car boot sales. hope this helps.
Petals Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 Car boot sales are popular Garage sales are just as described out of the persons garage sell all their unwanted things. Charity shops are popular for hunting down designer gear etc. Freecycle is a web site where people give away things they no longer want. Each area has a separate area on the forum making it easier to find things where we are. Even if we have the same products they may not taste the same as manufacturers tend to cater for local tastes. Not so much prepared food available as in UK, aussies tend to cook or get takeaway food.
Goochie Posted December 29, 2010 Author Posted December 29, 2010 Thanks for the replies! We have used Freecycle in Staffordshire and found some great things, including a brand new shower tray among all the useless junk!
Guest MagsInCanberra Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 if youre desperate check out treatsfromhome.com.au or taste ireland, you might get some of what youre looking for....both do mail order in oz!
boganbear Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Coles selll a lot of British things - particularly Marmite and Mint sauce but my dad posts bread sauce to me fromt he Uk. Treats from home is very expensive and has a wierd selection of things like Persil washing powder (which is OMO here anyway) but finding things like proper pork sausages, pork pies, black pudding are hard to find and often dont taste as good. I tried to find pork sausage meat to make Scotch Eggs over the weekend but the sausagemeat in Cole was just described as 'meat' and looked like dogfood
sussex boy Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 We were pleased to find digestives, hobnobs, branston, ritz etc .when we moved to the Alice we had low expectations !
