Hi All

So excited as in the process of booking tickets, but am in a dilema about what month. I have 2 boys 7 and 6 yrs, so they are going to miss a bit of school:(

I am not sure to book tickets for April where they only have to have 1 week off school or October then they need 2 weeks off school. My youngest has his stats in May which would be after the Oct travel.

Any advise would be great, as it has been a long time since visiting Oz, we are also going to NZ for a short visit. I just don't want it to be cold....

Thanks:biggrin:

October is nice as its just warming up for summer (although i think it forgot about summer this year, lol), just be wary that the majoirty of schools finish for their big summer hols early December ,we came in early Nov and my son was advised to stay home and start school in Jan. It worked well for us and we had some good quality time exploring our new country before we got into 'reality' ,but some parents may not want their child out of school for a month or 2.

We came out in October, stayed in temporary accomodation for 4 weeks whilst we looked around for more permanent accomodation. Kids had had 10 days off school in UK before we left, then another 4 weeks off. Both them & I were going stir crazy!

They started schools mid November & had 5 weeks before holidays started. I am glad they had this settling in period. A few people suggested just keep them off until February but I would have gone totally crazy by then! saying that, I m enjoying the time off with them now!

So they will go back in February, familiar with where to go & what to do & no longer be the 'new' child !

I wouldn't worry too much about them missing some schooling, I think ours were out for aprox 8 weeks but they didn't miss out on anything and when they did start they were doing work that they had done prior to the move so it worked out fine.

Personally in Melbourne I find that the Brits who come out after summer struggle to cope with arriving in a new country and the winter being on them. So I would probably look at October over April.

As their UK educational progress is totally irrelevant in Aus (ie no one is going to know or care whether they have done SATS or sat on their thumbs) it really doesnt matter when you come school wise. Come when suits you for work, finding accommodation, coping with the weather etc. As the others have said, no one is going to get their knickers in a knot if a kid is out of school for a couple of months while the parents get settled.
