'Americanisms'

Have you noticed recently that whilst we seem to cuddle up to the USA on a lot of things we are also starting to use many 'Americanisms' in every day language.

It started of fairly innocently, 'Guys', 'Movies', 'Rest Room', 'Chewing The Fat',:mad:, but there is a recent commercial on TV that now calls the 'Boot' of a car the 'Tailgate'.:eek:.

I'm all for diversification and all that, and half the time I don't speak the Queens English, but it's a slippery slope, IMO anyway.

Next it will be, 'Faucet' instead of tap, 'Highway' instead of Motorway, and the worst of all, PANTS to describe trousers.:biglaugh::mad:

Cheers Tony.:wubclub::biglaugh::mad::wink:

I never use those words! It's boot, toilet, motorway, cinema, talking for me :)

It's slowly creeping in Brit, you watch and it won't be long before I say to you 'Have a nice day ye all'.:biglaugh: And EGGS, I just want fried eggs, couldn't care less about 'Sunny side up', 'Over easy', blah, blah, blah, which was a question asked of me recently in London, (not an American restaurant by the way).

Baa humbug I say.:wubclub:

Hi Tony,

Sorry to disappoint you, but the tailgate refers to the back of a pick up truck not a car boot... in the states and canada a boot is called a trunk and the bonnet is the hood.

I must say that living in Australia they used alot of americanized words such as "pants", "freeway or highway" and some are even calling the boot the "trunk"... lol... sorry mate...can't get away anywhere in the world without hearing americanism words !!

Cheers

Thanks for clearing that one up Karen, learn something new everyday I guess.

I can't find the ad right now, but the 'Tailgate' on the TV add is for a saloon car, so they haven't even got that right, :goofy:.

And you're right Karen, Americanisms seem forever prevalent wherever you go. I always wanted to go to some of the really isolated tribes in PNG, but what's the betting I would be met with, 'Hey guys, look, it's a tourist, fancy a coke, if not, have a nice day'.:mad::biglaugh::biglaugh:

Cheers Tony.

Soccer is the worst Americanism, also due to neighboures Australiaisiam has come to our shores.

But lets remember The Yanks and the Aussies generally do speak the most widley spoken language in the world "English"

What I hate more is the English youth talking as if they just got off the plane from the west Indies.

Do you mean mate, 'Blud clot ting', and 'Rice an peas an tings'. My eldest daughter mate has several girlfriends/boyfreinds who for all intents and purposes speak a form of Rastafarian, just doesn't sound right IMO mate.

I'm getting confused now Pablo.

Hatchback, saloon, tailgate, five seater, three seater, panoramic views, blah, blah, blah.

Whatever happened to the old Granada Ghias, real cars, no airy fairy knobs and dials, just a blokes car that sounded and looked great.
