paul1977 Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 i was lucky enough to be granted my wa 176 visa in november and are a little confused about obtaining my WA driving licence, i have just seen that you have to swap your uk licence over within 3 months of the visa grant date and not your entry date, as were not leaving for a few months yet can anybody advise what to do or is anyone else in this situation...? thanks
Guest JK2510 Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 I know you have to sit a test for the oz licence. I think it's like a theory test. I think you have to change it over within 3 months of arriving in the country.
Guest Guest31881 Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 You do not have to sit a test for an Australian License when changing over from a UK license. Just eye test and have photo taken. You have at least 3 months to change over once you arrive. WA has for sometime had this anomaly where their site shows you should change within 3 months of the visa being granted. I think you will find that members from WA will be able to put your mind at rest about the timescale.
Guest Fiona and Marc Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 Hi, we just moved to Perth from UK in October. You have 3 months from when you enter the country (not when your visa is granted) to get your UK licence changed to a WA one. You just have to get your eyes tested (if you need glasses they will just put on your licence that you need them to drive), fill in a form, get your photo taken and they send it out within a week. You have to pay $36 a year for it which I didn't know about so i would recommend waiting until the end of the three months so you have a couple of months free driving when you get here As you have to get it sent to your home address and the address is printed on the licence I would also recommend waiting until you have somewhere long term to live if you can (although it is easy to get your address changed if you need to). Good luck with the move! Fiona
Phoenix16 Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 Don't worry about it its really easy! I went to the licensing centre and waited about a minute, the person I saw did all the form filling, I read off an eye chart, no multiple choice questionnaire as I was lead to believe and it was done! ( so to speak, in my case I declared a medication that has no relation at all on driving but was told I must have a medical first and was given a form to take to my doctors. went outside and rang my doctors who said no worries come now, I did and the doctor filled in the form and had it faxed back straight away, I returned to the licensing centre 10 mins after seeing doctor and the same cashier recognized me, called me over, checked their records and issued the license, all in all with the complications of needing a medical, the whole process end to end was 2 hours!!)
Guest JK2510 Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 Thanks for that. I was led to believe a test had to be done. Perhaps it's applicable to another state. Well at least I don't have to brush up on my correct driving skills!! :goofy:
